It is sad to witness how the media deal with Muslim-related issues, as the Canadian Islamic Congress indicated in its second annual "Anti-Islam in the Media" study.

Negative words are always used to describe them: terrorists, fundamentalists, fanatics.

You rarely hear these terms associated with any group other than Muslims. You will not hear the phrase Hindu fanatics, for instance, or Jewish terrorists - yet in each group there are bad people.

Mohamed El-Masry stated in the report, "Muslims are often portrayed as violent people and we belive that can lead to increased hate crimes against Muslims."

If a suspect of a crime is a Muslim, the media take the opportunity to bombard Muslims with all kinds of accusations. But when the suspect is not a Muslim, even if he or she belongs to a religious denomination, the action is associated only with the person and not the entire group to which he or she belongs.

Timothy McVeigh commited a horroific terrorist act on April 19, 1995, by blowing up a federal building in Oklahoma City, but this act was associated only with him. Why then do the media fail to use the same judgment when a suspect is a Muslim? Does that suspect represent all Muslims on the planet?

In Palestine on Feb. 25, 1994, a New York physician, Dr Baruch Goldstein, who belonged to a religious extremist group, opened fire on people praying at a Hebron mosque. He massacred 29 and injured many before he was killed. The crime was associated only with him and not the entire group to which he belonged. If he was a Muslim, the case would have been different. Is this fair judgment from the media or a double standard?

Associating an entire group with the actions of some of its members is unfair and unacceptable. In each group in society, there are good and bad people. The media should be cautious when playing with words because such words could create hatred among peoples.

Islam, like all other world religions, calls for peace and love and is against terrorism and violence. It allows the use of force only for two reasons: in self-defence and to resist oppression and tyranny

I think they are actually protected by the media for PC reasons.

Example: Darfur--Everyone has heard about it and how bad it is. I have never once heard from the big media that the bad guys were Muslim. In fact I have had people argue that they aren't, but you can look it up and see that it really is. Also, I have looked at some of the websites that they put up and frankly they scare the hell out of me. Why isn't that all over the news; if I can find it so can they. That idiot in charge of Iran keeps an empty chair around him all the time because he expects some Emam to appear as soon as WWIII breaks out and he tells his people that is what he wants because it fulfills Islamic prophecy. You just don't see this stuff being reported.

I think our liberal media bends over backwards not to "defame" Muslims and Islam.

While it is "politically correct" and approved to defame Communism and Fascism and dictators, the opposite is true if discussing a religion. We must not say anything bad about someone else's faith because that is not politically correct.

It goes back to freedom of religion. We must "respect" all religions no matter how crazy they are. If they end up with a leader like Jim Jones or David Koreash, after the fact we call them cults. But we must never say anything bad about one of the "accepted" faiths.

(Add to that, if you say something bad about Islam or Muhammad, their more radical members will try to kill you.)

I don't think that they are defamed in the media for political benefits. They do a good job of defaming themselves. It's a shame that the good muslims have to suffer for the bad ones.

actually, i do not see anything that defames Islam or muslims in the media. they are always politcially correct.
it is the Non Media celebrities that condemn certain types of muslims because they SAY muslims are fanatical and Crazy.
But what would you think if people killed your neighbor or your family member. You would CRY to God that these people are EVil. and you would not stop crying unto all the evil people are destroyed.

There are many people in america, that muslims Call ALL christian. but in truth, a true christian is a lamb, or a dove. They are commanded to NOT HURT anyone, by the words of Jesus himself.

99.999%

muslims are defamed to a great degree by media and yes for political purpose.....and result is so obvious now....peoples are so biased agaisnt islam now, Islam and its teachings are linked to different types of lies which just mask our relgion and give a worst picture to peoples.and i must say media is very effective and now peoples hate islam without knowing wht actualy is our relgion...and worse aspect is that they never try to know the truth and follow that crap media blindly

and that media is successful in the sense if an animal dies of some starvation or dry weather ,their peoples would cry for hours but they feel nothing for mass killings in iraq(average 100 Iraqis/day) and they think that yes muslims are wicked and they deserve it...How pathetic !!! i just feel sorry for all those dumb peoples
