depending on your cherokees year i would go with the cold air intake, throttle body, if its the non high output i would put in a cam, complete exhaust system. that pretty much is all you can do besides a v8 swap or some crazy rebuild.

Sorry I previously owned a Jeep Cherokee... I get mad when I hear that people paid $250 for a cold air intake then they claim that it gave them horsepower. So many tests have been done which prove 2-5hp tops if even that. The ads for the intakes always say: "up to 20 hp" they never say "1991-1999 XJ 4.0 was dynoed with a 10hp increase. I had a 94 Cherokee Sport 4.0 H.O. I made my own intake with K@N filter. I believe I had better throttle response but I will not claim noticeable hp, sounded great though.

But $250 for plastic or aluminum tubing and a $50 air filter. That's a scam and you guys are feeding into it. Vehicles that benefit from cold air intakes are forced induction such as turbo/supercharged. Also Large diesels with intakes (mostly all diesels are now turbos).

Best power gains would be from headers and full exhaust. If manual get a performance clutch as well. Someone mentioned cams so give that a shot.

The cheapest turbo system will cost nearly 1000 if you order all the parts yourself and install them yourself. But computer tuning would be expensive so consider that as well. I couldn't find the site but I think there is a supercharger kit for the XJ, can someone comment on this for him?

Turbocharging is a lot of money ... perhaps you could consider putting on a cold air intake. I put one on my cherokee and i gained all the power that I lost due to running oversized tires. It is rather cheap at 250$ and worth its weight in gold to me. K&N makes one for your Jeep.
