I am spending a week in Israel and would like to go on one or two half-day self-guided hikes.

the whole area surrounding Jerusalem
has great hiking trails; in the mountains and valleys...

The Dead Sea area has some gorgeous valleys and rivers...
and of course, Masada!

the Golan and Galilee is full of trails as well...

You can find all the info you need through KKL-JNF
www.kkl.org.il

Enjoy!

Massadah would be a good hike up and down. Can be self guided and all you need to do is find a lift there.
Unless you are afraid of heights.

if you want a more specific answer than has been offered so far, may i suggest: ein ovdat (in the Negev, near Mitzpe Ramon), the Banias and Tel Dan (both near Qiryat Shmona at the foothills of the Golan Heights), Massada/Ein Gedi, anywhere in the Golan Heights you can find a spectacular hike

a good website to checkout would be that of the Israeli Parks Service

There is a lot of open space in the Golan area, that is the north, They are friendlier there than they are in the Tel Aviv area.

Might get stopped a few times by army or police but they are on your side.

ENjoy.

I live there ( here)

North( near Golan). But also go to the Judean desert. You are in ISRAEL, but beware of Arabs who prey on unwary travelers. Do not hitchhike, Arabs have been known to kidnap and kill the people they pick up.
