Hi.....can I ask you a question?? Is your friend who is 11 years old developmentally disabled?? Yes, there are people who
are adults who use pacifiers because they take Ecstasy, I
am aware of that, but there are also people who are adults are
who are like little kids that have pacifiers. Could possibly your
friend be autistic or mentally retarded?? 11 is an unusual age to still have a pacifier, and I've heard of kids 7-9 years old with them however. And for the record, I AM 30 YEARS OLD and I still love pacifiers too. I call them "bippies", but my dad calls them "suckies". My dad just bought one for me yesterday at the supermarket. I kid you not, I really do love pacifiers. I have high functioning autism, and my emotional and social age is about
4-5 years old as I have been told by other people who know me really well. Of course, I also am a toddler in a lot of other ways too - I love Teletubbies and Care Bears and I'm the biggest Teletubbies fan you ever saw - I have 11 Teletubbies backpacks.
Used to love Barney too, but I grew out of that stage when Teletubbies came along. If you think I'm kidding about my pacifier, I can send you a picture, just write your email down. I have a BA degree in Geography and I'm sort of an "autistic savant" - I know where like every little town in California is (I'm from the Bay Area of California), and most places in the USA for that matter. I am also a walking oldies music encyclopedia. I can't seem to find a job though, and I think it may have something to do with my autism. I just can't work in an office, I
can be very disruptive. I also talk a lot. Having a degree in something doesn't say much about your social or emotional or mental age, because if your parents helped you all through college, that doesn't say much. And I knew where all these places were in the USA when I was like 6 or so!! So anyway,
I was just wondering if your friend was disabled or something like me. I used a pacifier from age 14 onwards, and I had my baby bottle till 6. And I do NOT have infantilism or anything like that, I just behave like a 5 year old sometimes because I can't help it, that's just the way I am.
Take care -- Preston from the south Bay area of California (50 miles south of San Francisco)

That sure is peculiar for a person that age, I think it's great you want to help her get over it. You might ask her nicely why she continues to use one, maybe it's a comfort issue ...I've heard it can cause problem with teeth. So maybe by coming to the root of the problem - could be as silly as her thinking it's cool, or a "rapper's" fad - they do weird stuff like bandaids w/o cuts.
Maybe by expressing concern but willingness to help her kick the sucking happen by low fat mints or straws or something - she'll come to realize she doesn't need the security blanket.

Get a box or container and get her to put all her binkies in it and tell her that she needs to send them with the orpan faerie so it can bring them to orphan babies that don't have any. Once they are all in the box or container, just take them home with you or something and hide them.
