American school systems begin with "Kindergarten" and then have 12 grades.

Normally, the oldest four grades, 9-12, are together in a "high school."

Grade 9 = 14-15 years old, "Freshmen"
Grade 10 = 15-16 years old, "Sophomores"
Grade 11 = 16-17-years-old, "Juniors"
Grade 12 = 17-18-years-old, "Seniors"

So, on the whole, an American student graduates at 18. Some graduate at 17, as they haven't reached their 18th birthday by the day of graduation. The cutoff point is usually September 30, so the kids whose birthdays are in late June, July, August, and September, will graduate at 17. Still, the vast majority graduate at 18

I'm not really sure the system really "works".

Students take a certain number of classes. Usually 5-6, math, science, english, elective, physical education, history.

Each class is about 45 minutes long. Students go daily, get lectures, do homework, take tests every few weeks. The grades they get on homework and tests average out to a semester grade. A = 100-90%, B = 89-80%, C = 79-70%, D = 69-60% and F = 59% and below. If you get an F grade you get no credit for the class. You may have to take the class again or take it in summer school.

High school students are usually around 17-18 at graduation or 12th grade. Some of the States have tests that the students have to pass because of the "No Child Left Behind" legislation. These tests are usually based on an 8th grade level. In some southern states this level is even lower.

It doesn't make sense to me that in order to pass 12th grade you must pass an 8th grade test... but I'm just a parent, what the hell do I know? I'm not one of the "experts". Obviously they didnt want to put a test out there that the President couldn't pass. Ha ha.

There is many different systems in America. I have recently found by watching TV that one community is doing something where they do not have a high school at all. I would have liked to finish watching the story but i had to leave. Most often graduation age is 17or 18 but there are those who gave graduated at 20. Depending on what state you are in some high schools are just 10 -12 and some are 9 - 12
The states keep trying new things.

In the American school system, you start out with preschool or nursery school, then elementary school, (1st through 4th grades) then middle school, (5th & 6th grades) then junior high school, (7th & 8th grades) then high school (9th through 12th grades.) Kids are usually about 17 or 18 when they graduate high school.

Unlike the UK, you finish school in N.America at 18 or grade 12. When you finish at 16 or grade 10 like in the UK, your considered a drop out and pretty much relegated to a lovely career of flippin burgers.

If students are focused and don't drop out and act like idiots, then they'll graduate at 18.
