Mom. I hate to see you waste your money on something that I will probably never use. Would you mind terribly if I exchange it for something else? I really want a (fill in the blank) and I could exchange your present for that.

Your mom won't care...really. We just want our kids happy.

I've done this...sadly...

Tell your mom the present was broken or spoiled in some way and that you took it back to the shop for a replacement but they were fresh out, so you got something else instead and you hope she doesn't mind.

She'll probably see through you, but if she's a good mom (and I'm sure she is) she'll appreciate the trouble you've gone to to spare her feelings

MOm's are usually pretty understanding. Tell her that you appreciate the thought but there is something else you would rather have.

Mom I´m an Egoist who only thinks of himself. Regardless of the fact that you decided to use your hard earned money to bring a little joy in my life; I am ungrateful, and selfish. When I as your child get old enough (if not already) to earn the right to recieve a gift from someone who cares for me I I will think twice about spending my hard earned money on someone who is just as ungrateful as myself.

Tell her that you dont think you would get much use out of it and would prefer to exchange it for something else instead of it going unused.

Very few people are emotionally attached to the gift they give, its the relationship that matters. Ensure her she is important to you and you think she is very thoughful, but you'd like to exchange the gift. Seperate the gift from the relationship and you'll be fine.

I have dealt with this problem with my mother my entire life. I would get things from her so inappropriate, or the wrong size, or just plain stupid... I had to sit her down and tell her, kindly, that if she needs ideas for gifts for me to please just ask me what I'd like because otherwise she was wasting her money!
