He has been potty trained for a while now. He hasn't worn pull ups for months. He has this rash around his genitals that looks like diaper rash. Is this normal? What could it really be? I just put desitin on it. I am hoping that works.

He is wearing regular underwear. We actually just changed to boxer briefs. Could that do it?

It's possible that it was from the underwear that he was wearing irritating his skin. You said that you changed to a different kind of underwear, that might do the trick and clear up on it's own. Keep putting cream on it until it's completely gone. I hope this helps.

If the desitin hasn't made any improvement I would switch to the cream for jock itch/yeast infection. You can find it at any drugstore. My son gets yeast rashes and they tend to have small dots around the main rash. About 1/8"? maybe?

If that doesn't work in 24 hours, or if it gets painful (yeast infections tend not to be painful) go to a doctor.

Also for the next little while wash his underwear with just vinegar, no soap, and rinse them 2 or 3 times to get rid of any old soap residue/chemicals from manufacturing.

It's a yeast infection. Put Monastate cream on him before bed and in the morning and through out the day. It will go away. My son has the same problem. It's from getting to hot downthere and sweeting. Also make sure you dry him off really good after a bath. Some kids are more aceptable to yeast infection then others evan boys! I thought the same thing about my son when it first happened.

Teach him how to properly wipe. It is possible that it is a diaper rash. My 4 year old daughter gets this sometimes because she gets lazy with wiping. It should clear up with diaper rash cream. If it hasn't improved in a day or two then take him to the doctor.

If he isn't "dried" off before he pulls his underwear up the wet undies rubbing against his skin may be irritating it, encourage him to practice good hygiene and show him how, in the meantime keep using the Desitin. If it hasn't cleared up in about 7-10 days call the Dr. to rule out other causes.

Grown men and women can have diaper rashes. I just had one a month or two ago because the pants I was wearing were too hot and was sweating too much. I wouldn't worry about it - it could be that he is just active and sweating a lot. Another thing to use for it is baby powder - it works great. Good luck to you.

I would take him to the doctor to be on the safe side, and to be sure that it is truly a diaper rash. I have friends who had this problem with their six year old, they thought that perhaps it was due to poor wiping as she is a girl. It turned out that she was sensitive to many soaps that she had always used and the sensitivity had just developed

If the Desitin doesn't work after two days, take him to the dr.'s to get it looked at.
He may need to take a soaking/playing bath more often.

If he has been on meds it could be a yeast. In that case it may take a doctor.
if you have changed detergants he could have a reaction. Or if you are dressing him warm he may have a heat rash.Let him run around in his boxers to help keep it aired out that can help dry it up.
