Because he was still a man. He might have got his wisdom from God but he still had desires of the flesh. Having great wisdom does not make him the best man. He might have been a king but he was still just a man.

God does not drop off holiday parcels of wisdom and head out for parts unknown.
All of God's gifts come with His presence. It is not wisdom but choice that keeps one in God's presence; else we would all be there.
Your concern illustrates that Solomon was a free moral agent, that God tests every man, no matter how "special" and that; becoming overly involved with women alters the heart of man where the gift of wisdom was meant to operate.
The story tells us that man, out of touch with the living God; will lose not only his wisdom but his kingdom as well.
I wonder how many who read this asked for God's wisdom when they were 12 years old?

Royal wives and concubines were a means of settling disputes, of cementing alliances, and of gaining allies.
He was wise enough to make his obscure kingdom the envy of the world, among the richest in the world, and quite frankly the most secure of the world.
Where he failed was in following after the practices and rituals of the foreign gods of his wives. After conversing with the only one and true God, he ended his life in the service of the gods of his wives that neither heard his prayers nor grant him blessings. His kingdom and glory vanished soon after his death.

Its the story of the wisest man who ever lived, but chose to live for the day he was in. He had a gift and chose not to use it and found himself worshipping the Gods of his wives.

he asked God for wisdom and was given it. God frowned upon what he was doing but God is also a loving God. just like today God frowns upon the things we do that he said for us not to but yet he still loves and forgives us. he asked for wisdom way before he had wives. he was living for God and then got into the world. and started following his wives and not God. just like so many do today. they start out living for God but either were forced to church and got drawn away or just started liking the playstation and games out there and tv and internet and started to follow those and stop living for God.
