Bicycling is the most effective, but a bicycle's a machine ...
Jogging, or skipping rope are great, doesn't cost a lot of money, and you can do it just as soon as you get up in the morning/get home from work.
Shoveling snow is VERY tough work, but it's also quite effective (just make sure to change sides and hand position regularly as you do it ;]).

Shovelling snow, chopping wood with an axe both burn tremendous amounts of energy. Running or distance cycling are also both great calorie burners.
Try this website below, it is great. It shows the calorie burning for over 200 activities.
I usually ride my bike 18-20 MPH for an hour or two, at my weight, this is like 3000 calories burned.

Running and if you ever have a chance to get on an eliptical machine, tehy burn calories fast too. You can burrn just as many calories walking as you can running, you will just have to do it longer to equal what the running did.

mixing aerobic and anaerobic activities, such as lifting weights for 30 minutes and then jogging or cycling for about 20 minutes
calisthenics such as jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups, and wall squats are a good way to avoid weights
jogging or jumping rope for at least 20 minutes would be the big calorie burner
