First off - a puppy should NEVER be weened from it's mother this early in life. 8 weeks is considered a minimum standard. He should have been feeding off his mother's milk almost exclusively 'till 5 or 6 weeks. Whoever gave you the puppy at one month's age was clueless, as were you for accepting him.

Second - it's A PUPPY. They bite, they chew, they chew, they bite, they play. That's what they're SUPPOSED TO DO. Especially a lab pup.

I highly suggest you either find someone who can teach you all about pet & puppy care quickly, or give the dog to a better home. I'm not saying this to sound condescending, but you're obviously, and by admission, new to this - and the puppy really doesn't deserve you taking too much time with your learning curve.

Word of warning... that puppy's going to chew up just about everything in between now & you getting him kennel trained.

Your friend's a moron... hitting and pinching a lab puppy for being what he is. Shithead. Play with the puppy for christ's sake! There will come a time to start enforcing rules against biting - but this sure as heck isn't the time to do it. Show the puppy some affection.

EDIT: After reading through some of these responses, it's no wonder there are so many f*ed up dogs in the world. People should have to be licensed to own a pet. If they were, 2/3 of you would fail. It's a life - for Gods sake. Is it so hard to learn how to take care of it before taking on the responsibility.

Some people really suck.

Yelping and withdrawing your hand really sharply should still work even if he didn't have other pups around him, because most litter/pack behaviour is instinctive not learnt. At least try it before you dismiss it - people use that technique because it does work - you're part of his pack, so the best way to train him is to act like it. Try to get hold of a book by someone like John Fisher or Cesar Milan who train using doggy logic and pack behaviour, they're great. Whatever you do, DON'T ever do anything which rewards the behaviour - gently opening his mouth is giving him attention and enjoyable physical contact. Saying No and tapping his nose is giving him attention (even if the intention is negative, its still attention which is what the pup wants), and replacing the hand with a toy is a blatant positive reinforcement...... any of those reactions are giving him the message that its ok to bite and worth doing it again some time!

I am having this same issue with my Lab puppy as well. I have been lightly holding her motuh shut and telling her no bite and it works with me and my husband, she no longer bites us but she will not for anything quit with the kids. When they do it to her, she gets more playful. I'm hoping that this method continues to work but I also know that she is teething and they need to chew. One thing that does work is I give her a bone or chew toy then sit in the floor and allow her to lay on my lap to chew on it. While she is, I rub her belly and it calms her down. When she gets too hyped up and crazy with the kids, I put her in her crate as punishment for 3-5 minutes then allow her back out. If she continues, we repeat.

As far as training, crate training does work best. Anytime she is not actively being watched or played with, he needs to be crated. As soon as he's allowed out, take him straight to where you want him to go and keep him there until he's done his business. When he does, tell him good potty and give him a treat. If he goes in the floor, tell him bad potty but ONLY if you catch him in the act. By time he's done he's forgotten so the point is mute after that. There are drops you can buy at the per store to put on the pee pads if that's what you are using that are supposed to make them go there. I'm not sure if they work or not because I trained mmy Lab to go outside. Good luck! (BTW, Labs stay in puppy mentality for 2 years)

Hi , I am a dog lover at heart, there are a few things you can try 1,when the puppy nips you get a plant mister and fill it with water, then spray it into the puppy s face2 gently tap fido on his nose and tell him NO. As for thie training trouble in the pet stores there is a product called wee wee pads, you take one, place it on the floor and let the dog smell it then in a few days he should weeweeon it,when he does this give him a treat. Hes a month old- its quite natural for a dog to bite A LOT when he plays. PLEASE don't continue hitting your dog because at this stage of development the effects could be lasting. dogs, like babies go through teething and thats why they bite so much- get him a chew toy to work on. play tiug of war with him. if he plays and bites you when you don't want- remove him to the yard or go elsewhere. or, speak to him firmly to stop. but remember hes only one month old.

yeah i have a two month old husky and he likes to bite too. i have a three year old sister but i gave him a stuffed animal to chew on and whenever he bites us i hold his mouth shut lightly and smack him gently on the nose and tell him he can not do that and then when he does no bite when he plays i give him a treat. he has got the hang on it and it's only been two days. short time yeah but had to do it alot because of my little sister. we just got him.
oh i gave him the stuffed animal to chew on because he's teething that's why he's biting. and he's very protective of my little sister now but we still have to watch him around her especially.

NEVER hit your dog. Stop it now!

When he bites hold his mussle lightly and say NO BITE. Then stop playing with him. He will learn that if he wants your attention then he cannot bite.

For pottying issues I'd recommend crate training.

Scream ooowwww, really loud even though it didn't hurt that much exaggerate a little then ignore the puppy he will learn not to play that rough, also if you every watch how a mama dog handles a puppy that plays to rough she will grab him by his mane and give him a little shake and I mean a VERY LITTLE shake then set him done and ignore him. He has to learn when he plays nice so will you.
