Hope to spend a week sightseeing in New York and arranging hotels and flights ( to JFK ) via the internet. My question is, do I need to be worried about being ripped off in cab fares from JFK to NYC? What's the best way to make sure I get a decent cab and pay the going rate? Sorry, may seem a stupid question but it will be my first port of call with paying for a service in the US?

Vanamont ... sure I get it ... that's why I posted the question. I was there two years ago ( from the UK ) but was chapperoned on that visit. This time I am on my own ... and you know I spent most of my life in London, so I know the drill. London is no different from NYC in that respect. But I do remember the hoards of cab drivers outside JFK and I simply want a fair deal. The last driver was rude, didn't communicate and simply spoke twice, once for $4 for the road toll and again when he wanted his fare. But on the journey back to JFK, I hired a limo and driver who was the nicest, most obliging man I have met. It made a lovely ending to my week in the States!

as long as you know the american currency compared to your country, ( cash=peso for example) then you should be fine..new york cabbys arent like what you see in the movies, they are hard working dudes like everyone else...if you think you are getting ripped off by one of the bad ones, take down the name of the cab co and the # on the cab and report him...
just a tip....NEVER show gobs of cash to anyone, always keep most your cash in your sock, then only have in your pocket/wallet what you need...and dont wear flashy expensive jewlrey, or weigh yourself down with cameras and stuff.
you can travel anywhere, just be on your toes and be aware of your surroundings and youll be fine..dont go walking down back alleys at night, dont be stumbling around drunk, stuff like that..
enjoy your trip here!!

When you get a cab, make sure the rates are posted on the door of the cab so you know exactly what you're paying before you get in. Most cabs in NYC do this, so it's not a big hassle. I was in NYC a year and a half ago, and this is what you can expect: It costs $2.50 U.S. just to get in the cab, then it's 40 cents U.S. for every 1/10 of a mile (could be 1/8 of a mile) after that, and I think there was also an airport charge of $3.00 or something like that. Again, just check the door of the cab -- if the rates aren't posted then don't get in.

Taxi fares in NYC have risen quite a bit recently. You should try to avoid taking a taxi into Manhattan if possible, especially during rush hour, because taxis now charge for sitting idle in traffic. I would recommend taking a shuttle bus into Manhattan - it's about $10-$15 each way, and the bus makes stops at all major Manhattan locations such as Penn Station, Grand Central, and Port Authority Bus Terminal.

You will not get ripped off if you take a yellow taxi - there is a flat rate fare of $45 from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan.
Then you need to add in tolls (about $6) and a tip.
When you get on the line for taxis, the dispatcher will give you a piece of paper with all that information on it.

There is a Taxi stand at all the terminals. The flat fare is $45 plus tolls and tip ( http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jfktaxiframe.html ). There is also a bus service ( http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jgtsfram.htm ) and the AirTrain ( http://www.airtrainjfk.com/airtrain/ ). I like the AirTrain but a cab might be easier if you have alot of luggage.
Here are a few other sites that might help you out:

most taxis have a standard rate from the airport to to manhattan, so they don't rip you off, i'm not sure about the rest of NYC, but I hope that helps.

If you go to New York City, it probably means you deserve what you get. I'm from there, I should know. Ditto for any part of California. Got it? Swell.
