The right answer is the mom, but without the correct punctuation it was kind of hard to tell. The way you have it written it sounds like the grandfather is the surgeon.

i see two answers. either the guys mother or father. that would make them the grandparents of the boy that was killed. it couldn't be the guy in the hospitals wife because they come out of the room saying "that's my son".
