I have a British passport so my husband and I are both allowed to work in the UK and I am considering moving there from the US. I am not allowed to work in the US right now -I am legal but only joining my husband who is working there. I am from Brazil and I have not lived in the UK so I'd really appreciate your helping me decide whether to move!!

Hi, you will find life very hard in the UK and I feel you will both be better off in the states. I am a UK citizen and dread the prospect of having to live here when I retire. The level of taxation is very high and I am making plans to sell up and leave the country for ever. I have sampled the American hospitality in the military and in their country and wish I could join you there. Good luck

Ultimately this is your decision, you and your husband are the only ones who can answer your own question.

I moved to the UK (am a US citizen) in 2004 and am very happily settled and am building a great career in London. My reasons for moving here were personal, not career or health orientated, which is one of the reasons I'm contented to remain here for good.

I lived and worked in an economically depressed area of the states. Upon moving here I found there are 10 jobs for every person who is looking for employment. However, that would be 10 (or more) skilled type jobs. Entry-level jobs can be found, but it requires more than one income to survive in the London area. I can suggest you use the Internet to research the job markets. There are many helpful web-sites who publish job offers for all of the UK. Research the likely areas where you can utilise your degrees. Through that you will find out what employers expect as regards to experience, more importantly you can query personnel departments via email to ask if there are minimum requirements as to work experience in your field IN the UK?

There are a great number of factors that can affect your settlement in the UK: e.g. What your degree's are in, the level of your ESOL skills, your determination to be successful, etc.

Good luck in whatever you decide!

The life you have is with your Husband and if your blessed your children too.

I'm a professional British Ex-pat (out of UK for 25yrs.) but would go back if the job was right. I love the sun and warm weather but ultimately the family comes first, and some times you have to be there for the other members too, like Mum's and Dad's.

Nothing is forever, a few years in Blighty wont hurt you and then he can visit your family in Brasil. The World is just geography.

Dunno where Kimo is from! There are not "loads of jobs" over here!!

As a Brit this is the UK as I see it right now:

Lack of good jobs. I know plenty of people with Master's degrees who work in pubs and waiting on tables as there aren't enough graduate jobs to go round. You'll end up working in a call centre unless you are lucky.

Too many immigrants contributing to lack of jobs

Lack of social housing and high prices for private housing

High Crime Rate

High Taxes

Underfunded NHS system

Useless government

you should not have to ask. i would live in a cave with my husband anywhere rather than be separated from him. The UK is lovely in the spring and summer. I think you will find it very expensive over here though.. I have friends fron Colarado USA and they love to come here for holidays. they say it is very beautiful, They also love our quaint little English pubs. maybe you would like it but what if you dont.....good luck...

go to your husband, being with him is more inportant that working, the uk is a grat place to live, and work,.Don't come here for the weather though as it will disappoint you, the people of the uk are on a whole freindly and very caring, of course you will always meet some people who aren't but then they are everywhere in this world....good luck with whatever you decide.

Lovely people, excellent weather, lots of jobs, and excellent national health service. Sure - just like everywhere else there are negatives but there are definately much more positives. England and specifically Hull is a great place to live.

You'll find it hard in the UK unless you have plenty of money to bring with you and are both well educated. Failing that, you'll have council accommodation in a poor area and a dead end job (if you're lucky enough to get one).
