Since beagles are pack dogs, they really, really enjoy having other dogs around. Your dog's only a year old, this would be a great time to bring in a new puppy - your beagle is still a puppy emotionally anyway, and won't have any trouble having a young puppy to play with.

We have 4 dogs. The beagle is the oldest. We gradually introduced her to new dogs over the years and NEVER had an issue. She has established herself as "boss" over a black lab and 2 border collies.
Have fun...your beagle will love having a playmate. If you are getting a lab mix, 8 weeks is GREAT...the beagle will dominate and by the time the lab grows, he/she will not know that it is so much bigger.

The sooner you bring in the puppy the better. I had three dogs one was about 7 years old when I brought in a new puppy and they got along fine. I got a bigger house and wanted a third. When I got the third the first two started fighting and had to get rid of the oldest because she got very violent with the second puppy. There were bloody dog fights daily. (I chose to get rid of the oldest because she was the only one that would not stop when I told them to). Usaully it is fine and there arn't many problems, but the oldest came from someone who did not train her and had many problems.

If possible I would take your beagle to see the puppy to see how she reacts to it. As long as she is okay with the puppy and is pretty well trained herself then it should be okay. If she is not very well trained then it would not be a good idea to get another dog until she is.

We just brought a tiny akita puppy in to our house with my big akita, Daisy. She did okay, but she did get a little terratorial. She acts like a mother to him. Dont let them eat together for the first 4 weeks. At night separate them. And always let the puppy know that the beagle is boss!

I suggest you watch the Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. It is a great show and you can learn a lot from it. Everytime you bring a new dog into the home you have to condition both the existing dog and the new dog with each other. I would say before you take em into your home, you take a long walk with both of them for them to get used to each other and at the same time you can condition them to be around one another, 8wks might be hard to take for a walk, but it won't hurt. You need to drain their energy first so they can be calm submissive and you can then condition the mind to be acceptable to one another.

if u choose the right dog and it is calm and nice to other animals around it, ur current puppy shouldn't b afraid of it and they'll have each other to play with and do stuff together. if it dosent work out, get ceaser :-) im sure it dosent matter, but maybe think bout getting another beagle??? thenthey'll have the same breed and they might be extra nice to each other

As long as you have the space to hold a lab - a big dog - and a beagle, I think it would work out fine. Then both would have a companion.
