You heard right, a knife made of one solid piece of metal with a full tang is best. All it means is that it is going to last and be very durable. Wusthof, JA Hinkel and Messermeister are high quality.

Top-of-the-line Chef's Knives might be overkill for your boyfriend's uses.

If He can boil an egg, but especially if he can make a soufflé from an egg, then high quality chef knives might be in order.

For some, just a nice shiny set of new knives will do, especially if not used very often.
Have you considered a different gift ?

Yes, all metal sounds cool. Easier to clean and will always dish wash or stand boiling water. A great gift if he is good in the kitchen ...... but insist on top quality with either a presentation case or block. Suggest you look in specialist kitchenware shops or top quality department stores such as Debenhams or John Lewis.

Zwilling J. A. Henckels makes a quality knife as well as other kitchen accessories so he could add to and expand his collection indefinitely.
