It is improper to return a gift. It has become a frequent endeavor amongst commoners and people generally with low class. It is simply not done in high society - and I do not mean the nouveau riche! Returning a gift is just as improper as a guest telling the host that he or she didn't like - or by not finishing the meal that was served, which as also an all too frequent ill behavior these days.

Till I realize I don't want it, for whatever reason, and then I return it ASAP!! Forget "etiquette" when returning gifts. The stores they were bought from don't follow rules of "etiquette", and if you don't return it by a certain time and maybe even with a receipt, you're stuck with something that could have been useful in getting a better gift. I appreciate your concerns, but in the business world, rules of "etiquette" don't exist. So, get to it, girl!! God Bless you.

If you are returning it to the store, do it immediately so that you can get a refund/store credit. If you are returning it to the giver then it would depend on the situation. I.E. If you received a bridal gift and then the wedding was called off you should have about a month to return the gifts.

When someone gives you a gift it is just that, a gift to do as you please with it. Returning a gift should be done when you are ready to return it, so as soon as possible.

There's no etiquette. You can return it as soon as you'd like, assuming that the person who gave the gift isn't right there.
