This question comes up quite often from newbies. There are several factors to getting clear pictures. The main one is make sure you don't inadvertently have the camera set in the macro mode in stead of normal. If the little flower icon is lit, you are set in macro mode. You want to see the two little mountains icon lite up. The second is how the view finder is set up. Some times the picture in the view seems in focus (overall) but the camera lens is focused at a for-ground object and hence, the body of the picture will have a soft focus look to it. This is one of the biggest advantages the DSLR's have over view finder cameras. Even with an DSLR, you need to set the auto focus point to the type of picture you want to take. Another is camera movement. Most all digital cams have a two step shutter button. The first click (half way down) sets up the system and the last click down, takes the picture. On some cameras there is even a lag time there before the picture is recorded. The camera has to stay still during this complete process or the picture will not be clear. Like any new toy --- practice, practice, practice. At least you are not burring film!!! Good luck and enjoy. I just got (a few months ago) a new Pentax DSLR and it is a whole new ball game coming off my 1.4 gig spy cam and my 2.3 gig Toshiba. It is every bit as good (an complicated) as my tired old Miranda 35.
