guy above has no clue what he's talking about. look at the legs of NFL running backs or world class sprinters. they're packed with muscle! the muscle you build on your legs will only help you run faster... provided that you still do sprint workouts. the misconception that it'll slow you down is because people look at big bodybuilders and don't see them as fast athletes. well, they don't do sprints as a part of their training! so, do basic lifts like squats, deadlifts, and lunges, keep your sprint workout, and REST to recover. you should be fine.

Absolutely. I never do leg strength training the day or even 2 before a race or a long or timed run. I feel like an elephant when I run with sore legs! I don't do a lot of leg strength training - just running and tennis and plyometrics, for that reason. I also don't want overly muscular legs, just what I need to perform well running, sprinting. Other people may have a different training plan, but mine works really well for me. I don't think loose clothing slows you down enough to make a difference - -now, if you were talking about olympic trials and competition, top level competitions, maybe, the minute fractions of seconds - - . I may be wrong. I wear loose shorts and t shirts now, because it's so much more comfortable in hot weather. BTW, jockeys now wear spandex silks to minimize friction drag when riding races (at 45 mph).

if you build large mass in your leg muscles you will sprint slower... your legs will be stronger but they will be heavier and not move quite as fast. if you do weight training as a sprinter you should do lighter weights with more reps. Also if you are an athlete and have a desire to focus on your training try this http://www.rubastone.com

They are liars whoever you heard if from. My sister had a knee surgery for a tumor in May. To heal from surgery she had to do alot of exersices with her legs. She is the best sprinter and long jumper in our track team now.

No, that is not true! Have you seen Asafa Powell's legs? It depends if you workout your legs for mass (many reps) or for strenght 6-7 reps with heavier weight.

working out just builds muscle. if you run for long periods of time your endurance will build. you have to train to sprint. either way you have to work out your lower body an build muscle.
