No ,not in the way the pros would like.
The political difference between the Democratic Class of 2006 and the old guard Democrats in the House is illustrated by their approaches to immigration policy. There can be little doubt that Pelosi and the new House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) personally favor amnesty for tens of millions of illegal aliens. However, the newly elected members who put the Democrats in the majority nearly all ran on a platform of immigration enforcement. Not a single Democrat representing a district that changed hands in the last election ran for office promising amnesty, guest worker programs and higher levels of immigration. In fact, nearly all of them promised voters that when they got to Washington they would work to enforce our borders and crack down on illegal immigration. These new Democratic members will join an already existing corps of Democratic House members, often referred to as the Blue Dogs, who have supported immigration enforcement efforts and opposed amnesty and guest worker schemes.

They probably will approve amnesty for the illegals because the only people that do not want it are the majority (see any national poll) of the US Citizens.

Big and small businesses make too much money on the illegals.

When was the last time Congress or the President did anything for US Citizens?

I would seriously doubt they will ever be ablet to get much of anything passed through this Congress for the next two years. If it is an "amnesty" it won't be called that because they'll want to fool the american public into believing it's not an amnesty. But still, I can't believe they'll get much of anything done and what they can get passed in the way of legislation won't be any more effective than what's already been passed in years gone by. If you stop and think about it, a Government that can't "do" anything except build a few roads, raise taxes and lose wars becomes ever less relavant with each passing failure.

Likely no.

Free market politicians are stuck between a rock and a hard place - produce and goods are cheap and therefore that cost (or lack thereof) is transfered to the consumer.

Cheap and plentiful labor allows companies to be competitive in the open market. People love their wal-mart - americans speak with their wallets, not with their votes. The cost of goods won't stay the same if you're paying people more.

If you think about it, you have companies like Ford and GM, who have unionized labor that have driven up the cost of doing business in the U.S. - in turn, they ship them overseas where they get tax protection and provide more jobs.

Illegal labor ironically keeps jobs - and tax money - in the U.S.

If you want to solve the problem of illegal immigration, you have to start at the source - not rewarding companies that move jobs overseas for starters.

And, better still - fix the immigration system. Any ideas as to how long it takes to get through the immigration system? A surprisingly long time, given the infrastructure of the manufacturing and tech sectors were founded on immigrant labor.

While on that note, how about improving education so we don't need to import talent?

There are hundreds of ways to fix this problem, but none of them involve getting re-elected. That's why pols will take a hardline approach and get absolutely zero accomplished.

Yes, I do believe they will.

Idealistically, it is the wrong thing to do. Practically, it is the only possible thing to do.

People can stand on principle that those who broke our laws should not be rewarded. In principle, I agree with that. But it's an impossible dream. The cost would be high, the benefit would be low, and the effect would be minimal.

But, we need to do 2 things in addition to accepting that these people will be here. First, is to make future enforcement a priority, increasing the punishments for illegals and their employers. Second, eliminate the rule that any child born in the US is automatically a US citizen.

The "deport them all" concept is unworkable. The "open border" concept is suicidal. Time to compromise and fix it for the future.

Ultimately they will. At this time, the best game in town is to wait. To let the situation go until nothing else can be done. As one other here points out, the government is between a rock and a hard spot. The best approach will be to let it drag on. The next several years will be appauling if you don't like the way it is now.

Bush has already proved that he is a total idiot. The Democrats in Congress have already established that they believe that amnesty is the answer. I believe they call it a "comprehensive" plan. They are entirely too stupid to look back to 1986 to see that the last "comprehensive" plan was a total failure.
Bush is a lame duck but he will try and push his amnesty for all plan before he leaves office. Kennedy and McCain are working on a "streamlined" oh lets just give them all amnesty plan.

Yes they are going to try to force this down the American peoples throat because they ARE the liberal elite and they know better. F**k what the American people want
