I agree with the children, but as for the women, forget about it.

A child should definitely walk to the inside, holding the grown-up's hand. The presence of a responsible adult acts as a barrier between a sometimes-impulsive child and the danger in the road. Although as for the women, I literally did not know about that custom until I was 25 years old. I had never noticed it being practiced, and it therefore made no difference to me.

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately, it seems to me that many parents have not taught their children proper etiquette on many subjects and when they become adults, they're clueless. I would love to see the public school system teach etiquette to children so we can straighten this out. One day out of the entire year would be a huge improvement. If they don't learn it at home, school is the next best option.

When my 3 year old daughter and I go for a walk, I ALWAYS keep her on the inside. It's just common sense really. I want to keep her safe from on coming traffic. I've never thought much about my husband walking on the outside though. I suppose I don't fear the traffic for myself.

I'm not so worried about women... myself being one... it really makes no difference to me whether I'm on the traffic side or not. However' for safety's sake, I agree that children should be kept on the "safe" side.
Tonalc had a good answer- if a car jumps the curb- which isn't very likely to happen anyway- it won't matter who's on the outside; both people will get seriously injured anyway.

I used to read etiquette and cook books like other people would read romance novels. So yes, I knew that. It would be a good thing if teachers taught this stuff in the junior high schools.

This was an etiquette rule when it was common for horse-drawn carriages to splash mud from the unpaved streets prevalent to the time.
If a car's going to jump the curb, it won't make a whole lot of different who's on the outside.

I think this rule of etiquette began in London to spare the ladies from the slop emptied from chamber pots from the windows of upper floors.

There's no etiquette for that, as said before, the female should be on the outside as old etiquette dictates that the man should get the bucket of piss and **** on him, not the chick.
If you have a problem with that, take it up with the 18th century.

My husband knows that, and I didn't even think about it before I met him! He always directs me to the curb and walks on the street side. What a gentleman. :)
It does seem like chivalry is dead, though, doesn't it?
