male cat (unknown age, till recently a stray) has kidney problems- as the vet said-, his gums are also in terrible condition - i don'tt understand, they look "black".
Vet gave him medicine for one week treatment and after the week: either the treatment will save him or he will be put into sleep.

Is there anything else we can do for him?

Cat was recently picked up from the street by rescuers.

Don't put him to sleep. He was surviving till now, wasn't he? To rescue a cat in order to kill him is an oxymoron. Give him food for renal problems and let him live as long as he can!

That depends on how serious his problems are. Bad gums can cause a whole laundry list of problems. If he has gum disease, his teeth could be rotten, and each time he swallows, he swallows bacteria from his infected gums and decaying teeth. The bacteria can affect his lungs, his heart, his stomach, etc. Very bad to have bad teeth for an animal. Kidney disease can usually be treated, but it will be a life-long battle. It can also be very expensive over time, and he may always feel "bad." Given he has these problems, he is probably fairly old. He may also have other illnesses that have not been detected yet. There are things you can do, but you have to decide if you wish to put the time and money into treating a stray cat. You also don't know how much longer this cat will live or how much pain/discomfort he is in. Euthanasia may be the most humane course of action in this situation.

MY male cat was just diagnosed w/ kidney deasease and hyper active thyroidism. I give him I.V. every other day as well as a special diet of canned food the vet gave me. He is on Tapazole/Methimazole 5mg. half a tablet a day. Already improving greatly. Good luck please keep me updated! I LOVE my cat.
