In May of '07 I plan an electric wheelchair trip from Tijuana Mx to, at least, SF, CA. Do you know if I need a permit from the CHP to putter on the freeway?

I dont recommend it. It seems like alot of wear and tear on your wheelchair. And may be dangerous, unless you have a whole gang with you. But contact your local government to find out what is required by way of permits for all the states you will be traveling through. Maybe the department of transportation in your state could also help with guiding you to the right place to find out about a permit.

You must be nuts.

For your own sake and the cars on the road don't do it.

People will be watching you and not the road.
The sight of a wheelchair on the road will make people slow down and look. As enough people slow down traffic will get backed up and eventually cause and accident.

Most freeways have a minimum speed limit to keep traffic moving and prevent backup accidents.

You can call your Department of Transportation in Cali to find out the answer to this question. I can tell you that it will most likely be "sorry pal, no permit....don't even think about it"...but that's just a guess. GOOD LUCK!!

You won't get a permit. Buy you might get arrested if you're lucky, or killed if you're not.
