My husband is in Iraq and I just received 2 letters from him and when I opened them, they smelled like cigarette smoke. Could the smell of smoke just be from people that work in the post office or where ever they have outgoing mail lying around? I don't think my husband is smoking but the letters stink!

I don't want him smoking because it is an awful addiction and it is very hard to break. I am asking for practical answers not rhetorical ones.

The letter could have picked it up anywhere coming from Iraq. It could also be from something in Iraq or one of his friends smoking while he was writing the letter or sometihng. Ask him in your next letter.

Lemme get this right; you'll let him go into the Army but not smoke?

Having been in the Army I can tell you that many non-tobacco users do use cigarettes and chewing tobacco as a way to relieve stress and to pass the time. "Smoke'm if you got 'em" is what was said when we were holding before or after formation and no one would mess with you if you were taking a break by smoking. Sometimes I would just hold a burning cigarette just to get a break and relax and not have someone grab me for some job. We would also use cigarettes as currency. When deployed I would always carry two cartons to have for trade. I am certain he is around smokers and I wouldn't worry to much even if he is taking a drag now and then. It may be one of the safer things he is doing.

The letters may have been written around other soliders who smoke, there is not alot of privacy in the Military.

It's a federal offense to smoke within 50 feet of a federal building, which includes military buildings. Unless he's wrting them while he's smoking and blowing the smoke on them intentionally, I can't think of what would make them wreak of smoke like that.
