All Dogs, like humans, can also suffer from allergies. Itching of the skin is the most common symptom of a dog allergy. The respiratory tract can be affected causing coughing, sneezing, and/or wheezing. At times, the eyes and nose may develop a discharge. Also, the digestive system may be affected causing vomiting or diarrhea.
About 20 percent of the dogs in the United States suffers from some type of allergy, whether it be atopic dermatitis, flea allergy, food allergy, inhalant allergy, contact allergy, or bacterial allergy.

Any dog can have allergies. We had a beagle that had both respiratory and skin allergies (with a snotty nose only rivaled by a two year old child!). We used special shampoos on her skin, and we even gave her prescribed allergy medication, later switching to an over the counter medication recommended by our pharmacist (Coricidin). If you suspect allergies, get your dog to the vet. Our beagle once had allergies so bad that she got a sinus infection, just like people do (the vet had to wash out her sinuses---not pleasant.)

Yes, dogs, all breeds, can and often do have allergies. Unlike Cats, dogs are susceptible to every illness humans are, colds, flu, allergies, cancer, asthma and everything in between. The smaller the dog, the more likely he/she is to get ill along with his/her master. (Smaller breeds such as Shiatsu, are nervous breeds and that gives them a weaker immune system than larger breeds.) Good Luck.

they are very bad to have allergies...my vet told me I could give my 2 shih tzu's benedryl. mine are about 10 pounds each so they get about 1/2 tsp. I use the children's complete allergy medicine ( which is generic).
