in response to another question of mine, someone replied with "he knows when you've done bad and he knows when you've done good" and it reminded of the line in the song about santa "he knows when you are sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows when you've been bad or good so be good for goodness sake"...now that's going to be stuck in your head.

Santa is far better. He brings nothing but joy in the form of gifts. God brings misery and suffering as a test of faith. When you screw up on God's eyes, its into the eternal fire pits. When you screw up with Santa, its a lump of coal and a chance to redeem yourself next year....

I have noticed the similarity myself. I guess if you believe in a god that is super loving and generous, then yes - santa and god are very similar. I've been telling people that Santa is the respresentation of the spirit of love and I would say similarly about god and jesus, for that matter.

edit:Saint Nicholas was a real man(as you said) and Satan is sometimes called Old Nick... now, Nick, Nicholas...is god like santa?or like satan?..

Of course they are alike! They are both mythical figures which we tell our children about to make them behave. The penalties for being naughty are a bit different though, coal in your stocking on X-mas or burning in hell for all eternity. The same anyway. Damn the things we tell our children.
