I have a what I think is an 18th century painting of a medical operation. It's painted on wood and I'm sure it's European but other than that I don't know much else about it (no signature or other readable marks I can find). Can someone recommend a website or forum to help, before I go to the expense of paying for an appraiser? I have a photo. Thanks, Mark

Hey Mark,

These are really good sites. Also, you might call a gallery or an auction house.

Sometimes you can write a letter to an art museum and ask how they may help you and what it would require. this may mean mailing a phot to them and more information also, they may or may not charge a fee,but I's say it's cheaper than having a person come out. Also, they are interested in art. So, try a letter to a few Art museums or Libraries that have art displayed and see wht you get. Also, there are websites that have a lot of art and have it categorized by dates, mediums and artists so try paint on wood, probably 18th century and look at some of the art they have to display and see if anything looks close to yours. Then it you find anything, you may want to contact them for their reccomendations and that could be a way to start. Always use an appraiser that does not sell, they give a truer estimate. People that buy and sell may give a lower appraisal hoping to aquire it from you for a lesser price. Good luck.

I have just been through this process of identifying an old painting. I started with a search on the inter-net. This was a big help, but I had a signature to work with. Do you have any information on the history of the painting? Who owned it previously, where did they purchase it, what state, country etc. Follow all these leads. Also look on the back of the painting for clues such as dates, names and numbers. It would also be helpful if you searched the web using the information you do have such as "European Medical Paintings"' and see what might come up. Like a jigsaw puzzle, any little lead might lead you to more information. Good luck!
