A friend of mine was forced by his wife to go out to eat at a Chinese restaurant with other people. He HATES Chinese food. He was quite disgruntled about it and tried to hide it, but must have lost it because halfway through the dinner, he said to everyone, "I wonder what kind of "CHICKEN" this is!!!?

How does one even react to this?

Your friend is an inconsiderate ******. He also seems to be ignorant of Chinese cuisine, which has some great chicken recipes.

First of all most Chinese restaraunts serve "american" food also, he could have ordered some of this, and kept his mouth shut instead of ruining everyone's meal, on the other hand I feel that if his wife knows he dislikes chinese food, she SHOULD NOT have forced him to go, she could have offered to bring him back something he likes, or he could have gone somewhere with his own buddies. But since I myself have gone where I don't want to, I grin and bear it, but my husband will get an earful between home and the restaraunt and back again, I would not embarass other diners.

Sure, his behavior was inappropriate but so was his wife's. What kind of spouse forces their loved one to go to a dinner they despise on Christmas? It would have been best if he had simply abstained from the meal or if she would have stayed home and cooked him something they both could have enjoyed.

As for how to react to it... c'mon, it's pretty funny. Everyone is thinking it... so just laugh and go on with the meal and conversation.

Oh my,

I'm Chinese myself - so I can't help but feel a bit embarassed and offended. It seems that your friend is very picky and skeptical - you should talk to him. Maybe he had a really bad incident with Chinese food, or experienced something unpleasant.

Besides, there are more than one type of chinese food - there's Dim Sum, Szechwan, Traditional and more. He shouldn't be that rigid.

Well, maybe 'Sweet and Sour" would have been appropriate?

Even if he hates a particular cuisine its rude to make other uncomfortable. So you do what you would do with any other overt rudeness at the table, you ignore it.
Since I am a grandma, when my grandchildren go too far at the table, I give them the 'icy look' and the nonsense stops quickly. I don't have to say anything at all. If you are lacking the appropriate 'icy look' you may just pointedly ignore his faux pas.

I would have refused to eat in a polite manner and then gone to get fast food after we left. If it pissed the wife off then "oh well"! She should not have forced her husband to do anything. They are supposed to be a team who are concerned with each other's feelings and wellbeing. She sounds selfish.

He was out of line. Whether or not he wanted to be there he was there so he needed to act appropriately. What a bore. I feel embarrassed for his wife. If I were one of the other guests with them I would have probably kept my mouth shut after the chicken comment.

What your friend "lost" was his backbone and genitalia. Once he has re-found those items no one will be able to "force" him to eat something he doesn't want to eat. Especially his wife? Who is this guy anyway, Ray Barone?

nothing to react to.. your friend made an unfunny joke, no biggie, and there are other menu items on most Chinese restaurants.. especially if its one with a buffet

How was he "forced" into a Chinese restaurant? He had a choice to go there, and he chose to. So he should have not thrown that tantrum.
