the whole time I am trying to wash and rinse. I have tried laying her down in a tub of shallow water and rinsing, pouring water over her head to wet and rinse and gotten those little visors that keeps the soap out of her eyes. Nothing works, she is not afraid of going swimming at all. When bathing however, she insists on standing up holding one hand over her eyes and clawing at my face with the other, while I have to have a vice grip on her arm in order to keep her from falling over and getting the washing done as quickly as possible. She is fine immediately after I tell her we are done.

Anybody have or had the same problem? What did you find that worked for you?

My step daughter used to hate water of all kinds. Even swimming! Just take it step by step. We started out with the garden hose on a really hot day. Since you're several steps ahead of us, I'll spare you the gory details..... :)

I would maybe say try giving her a shower so that the water is constantly on her face/head. Show her how to hold her head back so that the shampoo doesn't get in her eyes and ears. We had a Little Mermaid doll that my step daughter got to wash up. If I washed my stepdaughters hair, then she washed Ariel's hair. Same with body parts....

Maybe you can consider washing her hair in the sink?

Or putting other products in her hair later? Say you put conditioner in her hair and explain that it takes the tangles out, but first we have to wash with shampoo. Or say that after bathtime, you can blow dry her hair (if she likes it) but first, we have to wash.

Let her pick out her own shampoo?

Just some ideas for you.....good luck!

the next time you are in the water swimming, have her practice holding her head back while you "rinse" her hair with the pool water and inform her that if she will keep her head leaned back until you are completely through that the water will not run into her eyes. If it makes her feel better let her hold a wash cloth over her eyes but tell her that she needs to put a hand over each eye that way her hands will be on the washcloth instead of clawing at you.

Good Luck to you.....I finally used the visor too and luckily it worked for me.

Some children really resist this either because they have a fear of gravity, or the feeling really bothers their head. Many children don't like the feeling of tipping their head back in the tub, since they can't see where they are going. Getting a shower head that can stretch down to her level should help. Then you can get the rinsing over with quickly, and have her hold a washcloth over her eyes. Other children really don't like the feeling of having their head touched while washing. Try massaging her head before she gets in the tub for about 3 minutes to de-sensitize the head.

My kids had the same problem. I have a current 3 year old that just got over that phase in taking a bath he would kick and scream that he did not want to take a bath. You should try these:

All to be started with no soap on hair ( cause once they get soap inthere Eyes its all over)

1. give her a cup to pour water on her self and her head alone. Tell her she is a big girl and show her she can do it her self that you will just watch to be shure she is ok. (for some reason it is a trust issue.)
2. Tell her to lean her head back and put one hand on her forhead to block any water that may try to go to her face. little by little pour the water from the cup on her hair.

I hope these little tips help.

Get in the tub with her to wash her hair and let her lay down in your lap while you pour water over her hair.

Turn the water on only about half way and then turn the shower on. Face the shower head toward the wall and she can stand under it.

I think it's a common phase.
My daughter screamed so much that a neighbor came over to see what was wrong!
The wash cloth helped and make sure you have a "tear free" shampoo. Also, you don't need to wash her hair very often if she's not very active outside.
After she got used to covering her own eyes, she wanted to rinse and wash her hair on her own. I was the helper.

My daughter was the same, and like the guy before me said I took her in the shower with me and we took it step by step, I brought a little wash cloth in so she could cover/wipe her eyes and it worked, now brushing her hair is another story. At toy r us the have a little rind you put around there head so water doesn't go in there eyes.

I used to give my daughter a washcloth to fold and put over her eyes and gradually started getting it wet when I poured water on her head until she got used to it and saw it was okay. It was kind of a slow process but it worked and stopped that high pitched scream.

I started to laugh after reading this because my son did the same thing. What we did was we asked him if he wanted to be a big boy and wash his hair, at first he said no, so him and I took a shower together and he washed my hair. After seeing that it was fine he started washing his hair. Give it a shot, see what happens.
