At petfinder.com put in your zip code and you can choose the breed. Do an "expanded" search (you will see the option). It will show any dog in local shelters that they believe are predominately golden retriever. You can specify general age and gender.

You've probably already considered this, but check your local shelters. Adoption fees are usually very reasonable and cover the cost of the spay/neuter, vaccinations, and, sometimes, a microchip. Due to the rampant overpopulation of pets in the US, there are always beautiful, loving pets needing caring homes. You will also find a wide range of breeds (many of them purebred) and ages available, from small puppies to older more sedate dogs.

FYI - Due to the breeding programs over the past 20 years, labs - while generally sweet dogs good with children - tend to have an extended puppy phase, lasting anywhere from 3 to 5 years. It's very easy to get an adorable 8-week-old bundle of joy, but 6 to 9 months later when you have a 60 to 80 lb exuberant puppy, you must be committed to getting training. At the shelter in my area, approximately 30% of the pets surrendered are purebreds. Of that 30%, around half are labs - some even registered and surrendered with their papers. Why? Because people get them when they're puppies, can't handle them when they get their full size, then don't want to put the time and money into training. That isn't fair to the pet. If you don't train them, don't blame (or punish) them. This philosophy goes for any breed. Just wanted to give you a head's up - especially since there are children in your home.

petfinder.org is a great site where you can search local shelters and breed rescues!

A note of caution though. I work in a shelter and we see so many labs come through at about 1 year old because they are just too much for their families to handle! They are great family dogs, but especially yellow male labs have a tendency to be hard to train and they get REAL big REAL fast! Maybe try to find one whos already a year old. They're still al puppy, but you'll be able to see more of his personality and size.

try your local rescue group! we have a golden retriever and he is AWESOME. He is a little on the large size (120 lbs) not over weight, no thyroid problems...just a really big boy! He just went to day care for show and tell this morning and was a HUGE hit!

Shelters: Humane Society, ASPCA
Rescues

I mean, you're not really looking hard enough if you can't find a lab! They are everywhere. There are rescues all over the country. There are shelters in NY, hell one is even featured on animal planet (Animal Police--NYC). look into shelters and rescues.

Go to www.akc.org & click on 'breed rescues' and check the Golden & Labrador groups nearest you. They sometimes have puppies as they may have taken in pregnant dogs, also.
