The way the new Volvo's are programed now make it difficult to extinguish the service light. I have an older Volvo and I used to work as a service adviser at a Volvo shop. I used to be able to turn off the service lights off up to 2003 Then they had a major software change so that you have to go to a dealer and have it set up to their computer which is connected via satellite and that is the only way so far. GOOD LUCK!!

Proceed as follows to reset the service reminder indicator (SRI):
- Ignition off
- Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer Ignition on
- The service reminder indicator (SRI) starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
- Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds . The instrument gives an audible signal when the reset has succeeded. The SRI indicator lamp goes out.
NOTE: If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds , the light is not reset. However it will stop flashing.
Straight from the Volvo Service manuals

HI there,
Switch ign off,
Press and hold button for trip meter reset,
Switch ign on,
Keep trip meter button pressed until service indicator flashes (app 10 secs)
Release trip meter button within 4 sec's, there will be an audible sound when reset complete and the service indicator will go out,
If trip meter reset button is not released within 4 sec's the service indicator will not be reset but will stop flashing.
ps The trip meter reset button is the button at the bottom of the speedo display, left hand side, almost at the end of the speedo needle when at "0"
Hope this helps.
Have a Great New Year!
Cheers

ok buddy heres your offical answer from a master volvo tech....this is what you do...get your plastic key fob and get into your car close the door, then stick the key in the ignition, turn the key to postion 1,then immeddiatly press and hold the tripometer button, while still holding the button-switch the key postion to postion 2 and wait till you see the "I" light start flashing in the center of the instrument cluster, then you can let go of the tripometer button and take the key out of the ignition---your service light is now reset!!cool?? FYI..oh and if you have a 2005 volvo then it should be a V50 or S40,theres no V40s in 05
