For snowshoeing I wear a long sleeved Marmot light weight zip-T shirt, a 9 oz. Primaloft vest, REI long johns, Sierra Designs windbreaker jacket and pants, along with fleece beanie hat, fleece gloves, OR overmitts, liner socks, VBL socks, and winter weight Thorlo socks in regular light hiking shoes. If it's snowing I carry an umbrella. If it's a blizzard I stay home.

well it`s not the newest idea as far as i know.but clothing depends of what kind of activities you are planing to do and how cold is this COLD? for extreme cold i use this combination when i`m on climb: first layer of stretch polyester pants and shirt(long arm) seccond layer of single layer polartec shirt and pant.(over laping at least 30cm between pant and shirt) third layer of double layer long arm polartec front zipped softshell with hood and high neck covering. as top layer i use thinsulate insulated ski pants(not stretch, even some loose) with inside gaitores and a heavy down jacket with technical hood. for hands i use 1-silk gloves, 2-polartec gloves,3-down mittens with palm grips. for feet 1-silk socks(or teflon),2-wool socks,3-VBL socks(not always)4-triple layered bootes(mine are millet everest model) for head 1-balaclava (double layered polartec with face covering) and a polartec hat on it. for eyes i use glasses so i have to use scott (dirt bikers) with UV blocker lens and 70% visible light blocker stickers on it(removeable at nights). well thats it .

It's not a new idea. people have been doing it for ages.
I have cotton/poly underwear. followed by sweater followed by windbreaker type jacket.
two layers of gloves works better than one pair of gloves, if you ask me. get liner gloves and then wear thin, windstopper gloves over them.
