It sounds like he doesn't know how to treat you. Fibromyalgia is a difficult disease...often the cause of pain is not know as is treating the pain. There are doctors that specialize in working with patients with this disease. Also, get a second opinion because Fibromyalgia is sometimes misdiagnosed. Do a little research on the disease...diet and exercise has been known to elevates pain sometimes. My best friend's mother has this and I know that she is in pain often, and she gets frustrated because the doctors can't figure out how to stop it. The flip side is that she has had doctors that over-medicate her which has left her dependent on pain killers at various points in her life. Bottom line, you need to find a doctor that will listen to your problems and help you find solutions...know that it may take lots of trial and error to find some relief.

Fibromyalgia is an auto immune disease which is arthritis-related, characterized by generalized muscular pain and fatigue. The term "fibromyalgia" means pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Fibromyalgia is an especially confusing and often misunderstood condition. Because its symptoms are quite common and laboratory tests are generally normal, people with fibromyalgia were once told that their condition was "all in their head".
Your doctor sounds like he either doesn't know that much about this "syndrome" or just doesn't want to treat you. That is interesting because a Rheumatoidologist is usually the one whom you would go to for help. I would suggest that you find a new doctor and make sure that the new doctor deals with your disease.

Saying that; I have fibromyalgia. I have had it for over 15 years.
What your doctor said is partially true. You will be dealing with pain of different degress for the rest of your life unless they find a cure. Some people have more pain than others and in different areas of their body. I have a lot of pain especially from the waist down. When the weather changes the pain gets worse, I am a living barometer. How I deal with the disease depends on what is going on in my life and what symptoms I am exhibiting at the time.
There are ways of alleviating the pain: Exercise.... the most important treatment......It helps reduce your pain by stimulating the release of serotonin which makes you feel better. Exercise even when you are in pain, don't baby yourself, sitting around only makes it worse. The increase levels of serotonin also helps to combat depression which sometimes goes with fibromyalgia. Antidepressents are also sometimes used to help you sleep. Muscle relaxants are also sometimes used for short term to reduce muscle spasms and help relieve pain.
Nonsteroidal anti inflammatories like ibuprofen or aleve (naproxen) may be helpful too.

Do research on the internet and find out more about your disease. I have included a website below that gives more info, and more web resources . There are support groups that help you deal with fibromyalgia if you need more help. They can also be found on the internet.

Good luck. Don't give up. There ARE ways of dealing with it. Learning more about your disease will help. Just don't let it control your life, learn how to control it and think positive. Positive thinking can solve many problems.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease. It can be very painful, but there is many different ways you can find relief from the pain just as you do for arthritis. Your Dr. sounds like he has a terrible and uncaring bedside manner. There is on line support groups for this disease and they help a lot with information as well as support. Unfortunately, I don't have a link for you right now. But, I DID have a link when my dear mom was suffering from this disease. You can google or yahoo search by typing in "Fibromyalgia Support Groups". This is how I found the link I use to have Bookmarked.

Conventional medicine does not really know the cure for Fibromyalgia... and it is a complicated disease because there are a mixture of symptoms related to this... there is no way that you will have to suffer for the rest of your life.. a lot of times it can be result from poor diet and lack of exercise... also try lookin into alternative therapies such as acupuncture which is good at relieving pain such as yours... try salmon oil and magnesium as well to see if it helps the pain

Hi And so sorry you have been diagnoised with this. I really feel for you. There is pain killers and muscle relaxants as well as certain exercises and therapy that can be done. However the pain is lasting. From what I am aware there is nothing that can be done except meds to lessen the pain. Sometimes the weather affects the way you feel as well as humidity.
I wish you all the best, there will be relief some days.
As with arthritic pain it fluctuates.
I really feel for you. remember to rest when the pain is really severe.
Hugs to you My heart goes out to you

Have you did your research to see what Fibromylasia is and if what the the doctor says is true. Or have you opted for a second opinion? As you are probably aware not all doctors have a good bedside manner.

go to the library and ask for books about pain management or arthritis or fibromyalgia. there are things you can do, but I'm not sure how well they will help. also see if there is a pain clinic near you. they may be able to help.

Not much of a bedside manner is it. I would do some research into some alternative treatments and get a second opinion.
