Religious people in general. Are you telling me the only reason you don't murder, rape, steal and do all the other bad things forbidden in the Bible, is becuase the Bible tells you not to? You really WANT to steal and kill but you refrain becuase God frowns upon it? Is it possible you just don't want the responsibilty of making your own decisions and choosing for yourself what is right and wrong?

Nice answer jameswalrus. You seem like a good guy. If more christians were like you, we might be able to have rational converstaions about such things.
P.S. I swear some people missed the point of this question by miles. So stupid.

Well, lots of things in the Bible are also frowned upon or illegal in society. I guess you could say that helps us a lot.
Turning towards God doesn't mean that we stop making decisions for ourselves. We still choose what's right or wrong, but we use the Bible's guidance to help us make those decisions.

I'm curious to know where does this question come from? A previous Y!A question? Just wondering. I can't say the only reason I don't do such things is b/c they're forbidden by the Bible. I've been taught right and wrong my entire life, so certain sins are just not on my radar screen. Others, yes, I have to restrain myself from doing, not just b/c the "Bible says so" or not even b/c of the possible punishment, but b/c I'd be violating my own sense of morality even though I'd be satisfying a desire or urge at that moment. Everyone is tempted to do wrong things occassionally, (except for those who don't really have a sense of right and wrong. And there are a few of them). Is b/c the "Bible says so" such a bad reason? Isn't it just more important that they refrain?
For a well acted example of a moral dilemma, watch "Dexter." It's on HBO or Showtime. Best, GG

They might think so, but that's not true.
Christians and non-Christians don't do bad things because of the society we live in that reinforces certain conduct. Christians, like other religious people, though, have been taught that they are good because of their religion. This is part religion's attempt to validate its own existence. It is also a way for religion to keep a certain amount of control over its converts.
In fact, Christianity, and most religions, tend to make their converts morally lazy. Christians can spout off what is good and bad, according to the tenets drilled into them. However, they have a hard time saying why something is good or bad. Inevitably, they just default to "God said so", which is really a cop-out. Religions discourage such lines of thought, though, because asking too much about the "whys" might lead to independent thought, which takes away religion's control.

Um, you don't do those things because they are illegal! The Bible telling you not to do them only reinforces it.
If you are talking about the 10 commandments those were rules to live by at that time. Nowdays they are just common sense rules. The Bible is not the only reason Christians don't do bad things. It's because they want to make it into Heaven and believe that you must walk a straight and narrow path to do so. Which means be good and good to each other. How good would it be if I killed you. Not good at all!

Is it possible that the world, especially this country, are more screwed up now because God has been taken out of everything? I think the more God and religion is attatcked, the worse this world gets. Just watch the news.

Nope. The reason Christians do the 'right' thing is because it is the 'right' thing. We are to live a life pleasing to God, and when we fail, we feel a very deep burden until we repent and ask forgiveness. We don't want to hurt God. We love Him. That's our motivation - no gain - not because we have to - because we want to.

No we are not like the world. The LOrd changes a converts heart, and he/she doesnt want to disobey the Lord. We dont have the same desires. Yes we are tempted, but Jesus has already overcame the devil, so it is easy, with Jesus' help to overcome temptations.

Seems to me that pre-christian tribal societys were a lot more pleasant. As soon as theology and the state appear it time for large scales wars and genocide.

Christians DO do bad things. They repent due to the Bible teachings....if you want to call that the teachings of God. Christians curse, coerce others, lie....just like the rest of us.
