Early tooth brushes were shared by the whole family - just a way to get the crud off.
Tooth paste is just a way to make a mouth feel fresh and make it more pleasant to brush longer- the whitening thing is a modern society need to compete with TV version of perfect.

I don't think they did... they used white blush to cover their teeth which probally made it hard to eat

my grandmother said they used baken soda which is what i use and my teeth are pearly white
