first report it to your local police. Call your bank, credit cards, and the Social Security Adm. (if you SS card was in your purse) and let them know your purse was stolen. Then call the Secret Service in your area, to let them know that your purse was stolen, was reported to the local authorities and someone has stolen your identity.

Secret Service deals w/identity theft. I say report it to SSA because if your SSN was in the purse, the person who took your purse will be using it.

I would call the cops first if it was stolen and not lost. Then you'll have to call one of the 3 credit bureaus and report what happened and they'll be on the lookout for identity theft for the next 90 days.

Call all your credit card people right away and have tem cancelled and new ones issued to you before you do anything else.Then call the police if you want, but they really can't do very much. ID theft isn't a high priority crime for most police depts.
