Other people gets angry when we reply as "dont know". The reason most probaly due with your responsibility and your consciousness toward your family members. They assumed that you should know at least something of what is happening as you are such as an important alibi in the house, because you hang around the most with them. Somehow it is essentil that you as a sister, the matter of age we dont touch here, to know where is the other members have gone. In certain situation it is showing that you dont care of your family members. I guess your parents dislike it. Well, i understand your situation. You are not totally wrong at this. Maybe you really dont know or you just being not attentive to them while busy with your own agenda. You should clarify to your parents that you alone cant deal with so many issues at the same time. They (sister and brother) should at least have the sense of responsibility as well by informing you whatever planning that they are undertaking. So that whatever problem is going to happen or any situation that might be happening, there is someone to know and able to lend a helping hand at a critical hour. Tell your brother and sister about this and make them really understand about this. Freedom remains but responsibility must always on. Update yourself as complete as possible to equip yourself for the future tasks, problems or anything. Parents are always curious and care of their children. Dont blame them but help them out of the unpleasant situation. They as in the return will really appreciate of what you have done. Trust me. Everything will changed. Good luck!

Funny!! "I dont know" is one of my best answers. Reason: I tried to avoid the question. Really! I do know, but I dont want to hurt or offend the other person with something I do know...!! They, specially men, hate it because they need assurance. ( I do this to my boyfriend all the time, and its turned into a joke) The funny thing is that he still doesn't get the point when I say that. I just avoid any questions by saying "I dont know".

They get mad because it's something they really want an answer to and they get frustrated. Not your fault. If they were asking question they really didn't care about like "who's the best punk band around today?" and you said "I don't know", I doubt they would get ticked off.

Maybe you seem like you have an attitude when you say it. Try to convey the message "I wish I could help you, but I just don't know" and be very careful not to sound like "I don't care" or worse, "grrr, why are you asking me?!?" I hear a lot of parents who complain that their kids say "I dunno" to EVERY question, so maybe it's just annoying to them because they hear it all the time.

Also, when they ask you something, take a few seconds to think about the answer. Maybe you recently saw your brother in his room? Maybe you heard your sister say that she is going to her friend's house? Try to offer them an actual answer like "I thought he was in the kitchen" or "last time I saw her, she was in her room."

They're just frustrated. Someone asks a question looking for answers and when they don't get the answers they get upset, kind of like you might be upset if you couldn't find something you're looking for, like your car keys or something.

Some people get mad about that because they are immature and demanding, expecting all their requests to be made instantanously. Others may think you are "lying" or just blowing them off when you really know the truth....so my question is which category do you fit?
(Of course there are many other possibilities as well :) )

sounds like either your parents have unrealistic expectations or something in the tone in which you reply upsets them. Only you can decide which of those things is the case.

Are you supposed to be watching them? Are you giving an attitude when you answer? Try responding "umm, sorry mom, I'm not sure"

and if you are responsible for them - they have a right to be mad if you don't know.

They are not mad at you. When they ask you, they might assume you know the answer. Giving an solution/direction to the questionwill help. such as" I am not sure where is my brother, he might went out with his girlfriend." or offer to find out where he is will appear helpful.

It's according to the type of the person. If he gets mad easily then it is possible for him to get angry when someone answers him by saying "I don't know".
