Wow! It depends upon which type of commuting you plan to do: urban, urban-suburban mix, freeway (wide-open or stop and go?), etc. I currently commute in the Sacramento area (Northern CA), about 185 miles per week on one of two motorcycles. They have enough power to get me to work safely, and I average about 50 miles per gallon (mostly urban/suburban stop-and-go traffic). PLEASE take a motorcycle rider's safety course if you plan to ride a two wheeled motor vehicle IN TRAFFIC.
It's VERY dangerous out here, and even a "fender bender" in a car could maim or kill you on a motor scooter/motorcycle.
Be safe and good luck.
