mjm speaks a load of sh1t, The law with an air rifle is that anything over 12ftlbs requiers a f,a,c (firearms certificate)
so its simple keep it under 12ftlbs.

You cannot buyone and it is illegal to sell even at a car boot or the like!
You need a licence for air rifles now!
They are banned and this is the items banned using the exact wording from the official Home Office Guide:
What is banned: THe ban applies to any air rifle, air gun, air pistol that uses, or is designed or adapted for use with, a self contained gas cartridge system. It does not apply to weapons that use a CO2 bulb system because CO2 bulbs do not contain a projectile and are therefore not self contained.
This is from 30th April 2004.
If you buy one that does not fall into the above category and you do not have a licence you will be fined...heavily OR could face a jail term of 5 to 10 years! The person selling it to you will also be fined heavily and in most instances will receive a much heavier fine and possibly a jail term. Air rifles are now considered firearms.
Go to your local Police Station to pick up the correct forms. A licence is at least £50.
Even if you do manage to buy a CO2 rifle, you must still ensure that the weapon remains secure and you will have to provide adequate security measures to prevent unauthorised access to it.
You have been warned. It is not taken lightly anymore. The consequences of buying one and being caught with it, are down to you.
My husband is a police officer and you can take the info here very seriously.
dogfisheggcase421 - Isn't that what I said or are you just to thick to read what is in front of you! Read the info (the full Home Office Report). You cannot sell or buy an air rifle that is self contained without a licence. Exception - those powered by gas canister CO2 bulb as used by pest control departments etc.

CF45 gave you a sturdy answer. And he already linked to the item I wrote, which saves me having to do it. in my opinion i'm of the opinion it is not correct tons which high quality you get. the two will do the interest provided you do your area and positioned the pellet contained in the wonderful spot (regularly the innovations) and use the wonderful style of pellet. As CF45 pronounced, a .177 gun will shoot somewhat flatter, which will make it much less demanding to get a sturdy hit once you do no longer understand the ideal variety. in spite of the indisputable fact that a .177 pellet produces a narrower wound channel so an animal will take longer to die with something different than a innovations shot. A .22 high quality pellet on the different hand makes a bigger wound channel and could be somewhat much less in all probability to over-penetrate with the aid of fact it has a bigger area and decrease velocity. in spite of the indisputable fact that the trajectory would be somewhat greater reported which makes precise variety estimation greater important while you are going to hit a objective below a million-inch in diameter (the innovations). As for the bit approximately ability... till you have a firearms certificates, contained in the united kingdom air-rifles are limited to no greater effective than 12 ft-lbs of muzzle ability. regularly companies leave themselves somewhat a secure practices margin to circumvent by twist of destiny going over the 12 ft-lb cut back and producing a firearm. for the reason that it quite is the case maximum "comprehensive-ability" united kingdom airguns will produce approximately eleven-eleven.5 ft-lbs. that is greater effective than sufficient ability for the animals you're making plans to seek, provided you get rather close, say 30 yards or so, and cut back your self to photos to the innovations. As for what pellets to get... you will purely would desire to test somewhat. With airguns you opt to apply the particular style of pellet your gun shoots maximum wisely to make the lots of the flexibility the gun has. yet looking that particular style of pellet includes some trial and mistake. analyzing comments can help narrow issues down, yet you quite do would desire to test to work out which pellet your gun shoots maximum suitable.

Mjm......your answer only applies to a very particular type of air gun. Airguns in general remain available without license.....as long as you are a certain age. So go tell that to hubby!!!
