The birth certificate will most likely have your parents's names, address and social security numbers, and may have your social security number as well. All of this information in the hands of a criminal raises the risk of identity theft significantly.

I would suggest contacting a credit monitoring company for youself AND your parents for a while. You can try Citi Credit Monitoring Service for about $10/month. This service can send you timely alerts via email or text message if it detects fraudulent activity and also allows access to identity theft experts to assist you with identity theft issues. I would definitely do this for a few months and if nothing bad happens you can cancel it. Hope this helps.

I was robbed. They took my briefcase, my purse. I had my SS card, my birth certificate, my driver's license and all my credit cards stolen. Plus my check books. Yeah, I know. Pretty dumb to keep all that stuff together. I have never had anything happen because of it. Just file for a new birth certificate. They usually don't have any identifying numbers on them anyway. You can get identity theft protection through your credit card companies, insurance companies and even online. That way if someone does use it you'll have back up to fight it.

Criminals can do anything they set their mind to, but for your own peace of mind, report it to the Big Three credit bureaus... those being... Experian Profile Maintenance, PO Box 9558, Allen, Texas 75013; TransUnion, PO Box 2000, Chester, PA 19022; and Equifax, PO Box 144717, Orlando, FL 32814. Better safe than sorry.

You can report it. You can also get a duplicate birth certificate from your court house. Also, alert the credit bureaus and they will place a fraud alert on your accounts.

there's not much they can do with just a birth certificate. so i doubt they're gonna steal your ID. go down to your governmen building and tell them. they may charge you a small fee for a new one. but thy'll give it to you

Dont worry about someone using your b cert because you need 2 forms of ids and if someone really wanted to get your identity they could.
