Where I live there is a fine for smoking in a vehicle with a child who is in a carseat. I completely agree with this law and think that the fines should be higher. Your child did not choose to smoke like you did. It is unfair that some parents don't see it this way & insist on hurting their kids.

I think that smoking around children should be prohibited. Buying tobacco for a minor is illegal so I agree...smoking around children should also be illegal. So they aren't smoking, but they have to sit in that closed area and smell the smoke constantly! I know some people who smoke and have kids. They step outside or having a "smoking room" in the house that is ventilated. The kids do not go in that room so they are pretty much not around smoke (I know some will seep, but the majority won't). However, my cousin is breastfeeding which I thought was so great...and she smokes 2 packs a day. And they smoke in the car (it's winter...so you know the smoke is staying mostly in the car since it's too cold to roll the window down all the way) and I think this is pathetic. The child is not even 8 months old and has no way to escape what they are doing to her! I think it's so sad to take such a good thing (such as breastfeeding) and make it awful by smoking.
So yeah, I totally see where you're coming from and agree....might I add...I smoked a pack a day until I found out I was pregnant so I'm not some crazy person who is "perfect" and criticizes others for their actions. I'd also like to say smoking is an addiction, but you should have your priorities in order. I've taken LONG trips (where I thought I'd die from lack of smoking) with my friend and her daughter and I did not smoke unless we'd stop at a gas station or something. I'd get out of the car and smoke a cigarette so her daughter would not be exposed...it's just common courtesy which is what people need more than laws.

I agree with you that smoking around young children or any other non-smoker in a confined space is terrible. However we do not have the resources available to police such a thing. In alot of areas you cannot drive and talk on the cell phone and if caught eating while driving you could be fined. However to expect our police force to now watch out for the cigarette smokers is just too much!

ok, I used to smoke and I chose not to smoke in the car with my kids. My husband also smokes and he smokes outside of the home and doesn't smoke in the car with the kids. The difference between us and some other people is we do care about the health of our children. But, would you want someone telling you that you can have that can or bottle of soda in your car with you because it has been linked to childhood obesity? Come on and get real, we have lost alot of our "freedoms" in this country because of a select few. If you dont agree with it, stay away from people who do it. It really isnt that hard.

People smoke with kids nearby because they're stupid enough to either not care about the kid or don't realize they're harming them. I think fines and jail time should be given out to those who are smoking because they are endangering everyone they meet, including themselves. If there is a good enough incentive to stop smoking, then people will, and all sorts of smoking-related problems will decrease severely.

maybe we should take all the rights of people away would that make you feel better? come on. people smoke. ok well if they are smoking near your kids do what i do move your kids. hello its not really all that hard. how is it fair to take away peoples rights to do what they want. next you won't want people with body art of any kind aloud near your children. or how about those people who use oxygen man thats just a bomb waiting to go off. get a grip and don't try to change things that cant be changed. oh and before you get any ideas im not a smoker never have been i don't really know many people who do smoke either. i just don't think we should take away peoples rights to do what they want just because we don't like it.
