I have never had my hair colored, and I am thinking about trying it. I am not sure whether I should drop a wad of cash at the salon or try a relatively inexpensive do-it-yourself product since I'm not even sure I'd like coloring it to begin with. My natural color is a fairly dark brown and I would like to go to black. It seems like that should be a pretty fool-proof change, but since I have never even had it done before, I am not sure I want to go it alone.

So, my questions are these:

1) How hard are the home coloring products to use? (They look kind of confusing.)

2) Am I right in thinking that a brown to black dye should be pretty forgiving, even for a newbie?

3) Would you recommend trying it at home for the first time, only after I've had it done at least once professionally, or never?

Thanks - your input is appreciated!

Since you have fairly dark hair going darker should not be that big of a deal. Doing it at home would be easy, but DON'T US ANYTHING PERMANENT. There are lots of semi-permanent colors out there that wash out over time so that you have no visible roots. Also, if you don't like it, you won't have to worry about trying to color again, you can wait for it to fade out.

Clairol has a good semi-permanent color that washes out in 28 shampoos. These do not cause as much damage to your hair either.

Maybe if you try that and like it, once it washes out you could try something permanent.

Well, when you buy a home product to dye your hair, you just have to read the entire instructions once, and then start at the beginning again and follow them. My mom helped me, and my hair was brown as well, and I got it this really pretty blackish-brown-red shade, which was exactly what I wanted. Just remember that if the dye is $3.00, then it's probably cheap for a reason. Mine was $8.00, and it worked wonderfully. A salon might not give you the results you want if you don't communicate it right; the first time I got highlights, they turned out an ugly blond, when I'd asked for a shade of brown that was nothing like the highlights I actually received. If people mess simple highlights up, what could happen with your entire head of hair? But that's just my opinion. It all comes down to trust: do you trust yourself to do a good job, or would you rather put your money in the hand of a professional that you don't know and might not communicate well with? It's up to you :)

I would not color it yourself, ESPECIALLY since it's never had color on it.

Black hair dye is EXTREMELY hard to get out once in. You will have to strip it out to color it any other color, and stripping hair can damage it.

I would suggest going to a salon for a consultation. They are usually free (if it's not, go to a reputable salon....cuz they are free). And tell the girl you are interested in changing your hair color and see what kind of suggestions she can give you to compliment your hair style/ face shape/ fashion sense. You'll be glad you didn't ruin your hair for an 8 dollar bottle one at the store. It would take A LOT MORE money than that to fix it.

1rst dint use store tints they contain metal salts that aren't good on the hair..Use Miss Caroil tint its around 3.50 a bottle at Sally Beauty Store. You will also need cream Developer.
Depending what color you wanna go to just know color will not lift color to lift color you will need to bleach your hair to a lighter color.
I also if your not sure what your doing go to a salon and if a salon is to pricey you may wanna look into a beauty school they use the same products and they will do the same work as a pricey salon would do

sure... i think it's easy! i do mine all the time! I dyed mine black a while back and my natural color is black. it was blonde before so it came out great and it hasn't faded yet. it's been almost a year. the product i used was very cheap in price, just about $3.00 for a box. the one i get is called color silk. if you have hair longer than to your shoulders you should get two boxes. it's just two bottles that you mix. make sure before you color to put vaseline on your hair line so that way if you get dye on your skin it will come off easier and make sure you keep a wet rag handy to wipe off any you might get on your skin. section your hair in four parts, two in front and two in back like squares. put it in your hair and start from your roots and work you way down. i hope all goes well!!

Please don't try to dye your hair black yourself! It is not forgiving at all. Black can't come out of bottle. Other than that, it is super easy. The directions are clear and simple. Try something semi permanent (it is more forgiving) to see how you like it and if you decide you love it, then hit the salon!

I think you should get it done by a professional.I dint think it will be as good as from a hair stylist. If your not sure and wanna try,buy a not permanent dye that 's gonna wash away after 3-4 washes.
