The best AV I have used is eTrust by Computer Associates. I use it on my company network of 400 computers and it works great.

As a bonus for home users they give you a one year free version. Go to the link below to download it. You have to be using a Microsoft Operating System.

Antivirus freeware is commonly dismissed when in fact it can compete quite well with any of the brand name solutions.

Norton, Mcafee and Trend Micro are the three biggest names today in PC Security products. They make great software and should you want to spend the money I would recommend you try any of their trial versions first to ensure its what you want.

If you decide to go free then look at the Avg-Free and Avast solutions. They are only free for personal use so be ready to pony up some cash (around $40) if you intend to use it on a business machine.

For an all around answer I might as well add that Microsoft now offers One Care, from what I have seen I cannot recommend it at this time.

Choosing an anti-virus software is very much a matter of personal preferences. I spent a whole morning once browsing different forums and web sites, trying to gather reviews for the variety of anti-virus software available. In the end, what works for one person may not for another. Norton may slow down someone's performance, but run without a hitch on someone else's.

Here are a few links I found useful in deciding which one to choose:

http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

http://www.cnet (search for anti-virus reviews)
http://www.amazon.com (search the different anti-virus software and read the reviews)

This list should provide you with a good foundation. This year, I chose Norton Internet Security 2007, and I am very pleased with it.

The key is make sure you read both the positive and negative feedbacks/reviews on each product. Don't judge a software just by the "average score." Many times, this score is meaningless, as disgruntled users keep voting for a low score under different names, just to lower the average.

I work with computers for the Local health authority where I live and the computer guys in charge of that end of things recommend AVG above Norton, it is Free, and in their opinions more effective. I have been using it for 3 years now on my home computer without a virus. That with google toolbar (also free) for pop up blockers and you are set to go. download.com is a good place to download AVG from. Go to google.com to find the google toolbar.

Norton will really slow your computer down a lot and isn't even the best available just the most popular. Nod32 is better and uses less memory. Kaspersky is also a good choice.

I would recomend Norton System Works. Great antivirus as well as much needed system tools that help keep everything clean and running well.

Not to mention it is really not that expensive. Around 60-70 bucks i think.

Mac OS X. Five years and counting, still no viruses. Now that's good antivirus software, and it doesn't waste processor cycles scanning files!
