Kemosabe is from an Alqonquin language, similar to the Ojibwe word Giimoozabbi. This word roughly means 'scout', 'spy' or even 'masked man'. Jim Jewell, the director of the Lone Ranger radio series in the mid 30's, reports that he actually got the word Kemosabe from a boys camp at Mullet Lake, in Michigan. It was called Camp Kee-Mo-Sah-Bee and at the time, the name of the camp was explained as meaning 'trusty scout'.
