My sister in law is trying to get pregnant with her new husband. He has a kid that is 6 years old from a previous marriage. They've been having trouble conceiving and a recent test found that he is the problem.... less than 17% of his sperm are active or healthy. (I don't know the details). How likely is it that he was able to conceive a child 6 years ago?

Well, if 17% of his sperm are healthy, I'd say he has about 17% as much chance as a normal virile male -- he can do it but has to try harder :P

If he had an active sex life then it's entirely possible. 17% is really not too terribly bad. It's certainly going to make things more frustrating, if they're trying to conceive, but it's still possible.

Also, who's to say that he had the same low sperm count six years ago? A lot can happen in six years.

it only takes one healthy sperm to get a woman prego. Maybe its not the husband your sister is 1/2 the pregnancy. They need to not try so hard. The more sex they have lowers the sperm count. Best of luck to them

Well like every one has said it only takes 1 sperm. Sperm counts can drop over a period of time. Please dont go saying to your sister in law that he is not the father of that child, it is not fair. Also consider his feelings. He is probably devastated that he can not make the lady he loves pregnant. It will happen when they least expect it.

Just because his sperm is less effective now doesn't mean it was 6 years ago.
