All aquatic therapy/ workouts rock! Executing techniques in air, on targets, or in the water will all increase speed and power
BUT
water will allow for other benefits such as reducing stress on joints so you can add extra workouts in between-- great cross-training! Water also helps to lower blood pressure via hydrostatic pressure! It will help filter out your body by exerting pressure on your body but you will need to use the bathroom before the workout as well as hydrate lots afterwards(about 1/2 your body weight in ounce of water is good --more is better! i.e. 200lb person should drink 100 ounces of water) If in warm water you can add other benefits such as reducing pain because the warm water(90-94 degrees) will increase endorphin release faster than just regular temp waters.
Not only do I do my katas and other techniques in the water I also do Ai-Chi( basically t'ai chi but in the water)-- great for breathing as well as balance and overall muscle control! good stuff!
good luck training!
Happy New Year everyone!

Yes. Aquatic training methods are basically just another form of resistance training. By increasing the resistance your punches have to go through to perform a punch, it is similar to adding weights to your hands/feet in the air. The difference is that in water, your body and its joints are not forced to deal with the extra weight you would be tacking onto it. In other words, if you train with hand weights and ankle weights, you take a chance of hurting your joints. In the water you pretty much get the same effect without the dangers.
However, as with any resistance training, the idea to build but speed and power is to add EXPLOSIVE force to your techniques. This means that if you are going to train in the pool, just going through a punching motion won't "cut it" (pun intended). You must punch as though you were actually training, with as much speed as you can, as much power as you can and of course with proper technique. It will do you no good at all to simply throw a bunch of limp punches or "fish kicks" where your legs are dangling out there like a dead fish. You must force your form to be there and always keep in mind that you are doing the technique with explosive speed and power.
Hope this helps...

yes throwing punches and kicks in a pool helps to increase speed and power and also helps with accruracy, because it's resistance training.
I myself train about 2-3 times a week in the pool at the local gym for my Martial Arts training, and it's helped out quite well along with my weightlifting resistance training.

yes, throwing punches underwater would increase speed and power, but only to an extent.
think of it like this:
someone who has never punched in their life starts practicing by punching in the air. he gets good at punching but then his progress levels off because his muscles get used to punching so much.
the same will eventually happen in water. i can punch as fast and hard in water as most people my size and even bigger can out of water. the best thing would to work out on a heavy bag. this way your progress is consistant. as you punch harder the shock is harder on your arms keeping a balance between strength and power. for speed i suggest punching with dumbells in your hands or doing plyometric push ups on your fists.
