Actual correctional officer here.....I support the policy of shooting an inmate that is attempting to escape. For those of you who want to say that it should depend on what they are charged for, obviously you have not stood guard at a correctional facility, much less in a tower or a position to hold a gun in a correctional facity. I know that in Texas and many other states (I highly doubt that there is a state in the U.S. that does not have a policy stating that somone can shoot an escapee in the process of escaping), the law clearly states that ANYONE caught trying to escape from a correctional facility is subject to deadly force. Reasoning that I see this being a good policy is because of the fact that even though you may have worked in a facility for 20 years, you will not know every inmate there, much less his crimes that he is charged with or the crimes that he has commited previously. It is not your job to know. It is your job to secure the facility and prevent inmates from hurting themselves, one another, and keep them from escaping.
Sure there are other methods to preventing an inmate from being shot while attempting to escape, but for the one that said something about a taser, obviously you don't know what a taser really is or how it operates.

As stated above, it would depend on what they are in custody for if they are still at the scene or with the initial arresting officer(s), who know what the crime is. If they know it is a misdemeanor, then I can't think that many would believe firing on the suspect is justified. Unless , there is some reason to believe that suspect present a clear and immediate threat to someone else.
However, if we're talking about an institution where an officer is on a wall and sees a prisoner escaping, then yes, the policy should be without hesitation that the officer will fire. The prisoners will be advised and aware of this and have fair warning not to run. They are in prison for a reason, and should not have any opportunity to escape.

What state permits this? Here in Wisconsin you can not shoot someone for trying to escape for a misdemeanor.
No I do not support this policy. Someone may be in custody but not yet charged or convicted of a crime.
Is this person attempting to escape from prison or just custody such as escaping from the Police as they are walking the prisoner to their squad car?

First on the fence whilst they are escaping the correctional officer does not be attentive to the protection point of the guy, they are nomrally no longer allowed to shoot them untill they attain the precise of the fence and in come situations to a factor the place they are passing the tower section. yet confident, a prisoner is doing a legal whilst they get away, so as that they are automaticly risky in in simple terms escapting. as quickly as out of penal complex, the regulations of shooting for police officers does not substitute in simple terms becuase they seem to be a wanted felon or escaped.

NEVER fire a warning shot! Much less into the air. Where's that bullet going to come down? On top of someone's head?

no, the prisoner should not be shot. They have other ways, but then, the other way ( shooting with a taser ) would leave the prisoner alive. I have no regard for police. They are very good teachers, then they are amazed no one likes them? Wonder why? Huh, ya got me there.

Old ex cop here---------I agree if they have refused to stop after giving a command to stop then you fire a "WARNING" Shot.(in the air not in their BACK) Now if you feel your life is in danger or your life has been threatend then you do what you have to do. But, to just shoot for the hell of it and come up with some weird story to cover your butt is WRONG, andit WILL later come back to BITE YOU in the butt.
