My cousin is schizophrenic and a Christian. She suffers from visual, auditory and tactile hallucinations, and is a raging marijuana addict. She says that she reads the Bible and draws strength and hope from it, but at the same time she thinks that her faith may be making her illness worse, as she reports seeing devils and peoples' faces contort into demons. I know religion is sometimes part of treatment, but could it make the mental illness worse?

Her thinking is wrong. She doesn't want to give up her drugs. Many demons leave from people reading the Bible day after day. Demons tremble at the Word of God and the mention of Jesus' name. What is making her worse at the moment is the demon doesn't want to leave. If they've occupied your body for a long time, they don't leave easily. Marijuana addiction has a great hold on her as does the demon. Keep praying and reading the Bible over her.

I think religion is portrayed in her visions mainly because it is an important and active part of her life. For instance, chances are that a non-religious person with the same illness have different visions, probably very scary too, but not about religion. To answer your question, I don't think religion can make an illness worsen, but I think it plays an important role on the nature of her visions. If she were non-religious, chances are that she'd still be having visions, only not about demons or religion-related symbols.....

Religion would be used to express the illness - e.g. she sees demons because that is something she has learned is "bad" through her religion. If she didn't have a religion, she would see peoples' faces contort into monstrosities and it would still be just as creepy, just under a different name.

Following a religion certainly doesn't help one distinguish reality from what's just in your head.

oh fer sure. my mom was raised in the darkest form of Catholicism and tho she probably would have had mental/emotional problems anyway her religion caused her so much more pain, superstition, guilt and fear. she saw devils everywhere especially in her children and spent a lot of energy trying to beat the devil out of my sister and i. poor mom. poor me and my sister.

PS. raging marijuana addiction? sorry but tho marijuana can be mentally/emotionally addicting it can't really be "raging" as THC does not bond to the the body's molecular structure. your cousin probably tries to medicate herself with the use of marijuana for it's calming affects.

Yes, it can, and sadly, there are studies that support this. You'd have to find your nearest medical university library to get the journals this type of research is written up in but its out there.

Smokes pot, and schizophrenic?...Probably has prescriptions also for schizophenia. I think it wouldn't matter what her religion is, If she blindingly believes what she is told she will see similar things.
