It's a southern thing, when we've lived overseas fellow southerners are the only people who don't think it strange. Black Eyed Peas are for luck throughout the new year, hog jowl is love and cabbage is money.

Growing up southern, and now with my own family, we have black-eyed peas, collard greens, and hog jaw (jowls) for New Years Dinner. The black-eyed peas are suppose to bring you luck in the upcoming year. The greens are for money - the more you eat, the more you'll get during the year. And the rest, because we always make a pretty hardy meal, is so that you'll eat well for the rest of the year.

Your question made me smile. My family is southern and my favorite meal used to be Hog Jowls when I was a child. When I told my best friend she laughed like crazy, had never heard of them before. I gave up pork a long time ago, but if I ever had a hankering, it would be for jowls. Oh, and my southern family has pork and kraut.

Oh yeah, we're having Hoppin' John (but make with a ham hock, not jowl). I read somewhere that the blackeyed peas represented seeds which were meant to grow. So it's a sign of life and better things to come.
