Absolutely a Ragdoll. They have an amazing personality, very social and not hyper at all. They hardly ever put their claws out.

We have a Siamese Lynx Point Oriental and he's quite a cat. He greets us at the door, snuggles when we're watching TV or in bed, and talks.
Even with beeds that are known to be sociable, the way in which you socialize them into your family and home environment will greatly affect their personality. The other animals in the house will also affect the way the aclimatize to their new home.
Remember too that there is almost no such thing as a laid back kitten! And, males tend to be more snuggly than females do. This is not an end all, be all statement and I am sure there are plenty of people here that will say, "My female cat snuggles!" I am sure she does! But, as a whole, male cats tend to be more tender than females for some reason.
And, becuase we volunteer at the SPCA, please please please consider looking to adoption before purchasing. There are so many animals that are in need of good homes. Sometimes, to find the cat that is going to best fit your wants and desires, it's best to choose an adult cat as their personality is more developed and visible than a kitten's. And, it is so hard to find homes for adult cats. Just spend some time in the shelter, ask to hold and play with the animal if you are really interested. Find out from the staff about the animal's disposition and likes/dislikes. Volunteers and shelter staff are a great source of information about their charges!
Good luck and happy searching!

Maine Coons and Tabby Cats are very socialble and laid back. However, with all animals, they need to be taught proper socialization and if the animals are to be around children, teach the children to be gentle with the animal. On the opposite side of the spectrum is Siameese. I love them but they are hell on wheels when it comes to rough handling children as my nephew found out the hard way.

Both of my Black and White Short and Long Hairs are very calm. They are very laid back. If you want to get a cat then save one from death row. They are the best cats ever to get. :)

They say Maine Coons are really laid back and social, but they're not lap cats. They just want to be near you.

My sitter's cat! I don't know the kind, he is kinda the color of peanut butter, long hair, and I don't see him often, but he's great with the kids. He's the kind of cat that puts up nicely with little kids cuddling him and pushing him in the baby doll stroller! He's very friendly.
