The police is meant for mainaining law and order and make society crimeless. But experience tells us that almost all crimes are committed under patronage of police. Also people think that they can commit a crime and get away by bribing the police. In reality, police has become a motivator of crime and can no more be trusted with the task given to it, the eradication of crime.

I live in Delhi. I will try to answer this question in relation to what I read and see about police working in Delhi. Let us first see what Delhi police say about themselves in their mission.

“The purpose of Delhi Police is to uphold the law fairly and firmly; to prevent crime; to pursue and bring to justice those who break the law; to keep the peace in partnership with the community; to protect, help and reassure the people; and to be seen to do all this with integrity, common sense and sound judgement.
We must be compassionate, courteous and patient, acting without fear, or favour or prejudice to the rights of others, we need to be professional, calm and restrained in the face of violence and apply only that force which is necessary to accomplish our lawful duty.
We must strive to reduce the fears of the public and, so far as we can, to reflect their priorities in the action we take.
We must respond to well-founded criticism with a willingness to change.”

Ponder friends and decide on your own. Has the police lived up to what they say hey are?

Second, let us talk of the reality. Recently an ACP of Delhi Police has been sentenced to death for murder of a person in police custody. This is one of many such cases where citizens were killed while in custody. In majority of cases, courts have adversely commented on the quality of investigations, destruction of proof and various other actions, which have resulted in acquittal of accused persons. Jessica Lall and Priydarshini Matto cases are two instances when people have come out on streets against police in-action or wrong action resulting in denial of justice. An honest common citizen always live in fear of police, whereas criminals live with police as friends. Media is full of reports where police have refused to register FIR. Police reforms are always talked about but nothing comes out of it. Sometime back, a judge said that police are criminal in dress.

There is a long list of such cases. No doubt, there are good policemen but they are in such a small number that they are hardly seen in action. But still, though I prefer it, I can not agree that we can disband the police. The reason is that there is no alternative. Police has become a necessary evil but people have to live with it. I wish that there is a situation where police department can be disbanded

OK, for starters, the police will NEVER make society crimeless, no matter how hard they try. Secondly, the mission of the police is to serve and to protect -- with the hope that maintaining law and order will be a beneficial side effect. Finally, your last statement is totally unfounded and unsupported. Show me some proof that almost all crimes are done under the patronage of the police. I consider that a slap in the face considering the fact that my uncle is a Captain with the Michigan State Police and my father was an officer with the Redford Police Reserve for over 10 years -- are you trying to tell me that my uncle and my father are somehow crooked and actually abetted criminals, even though they both have long-standing reputatitions in the civic community of being above reproach?

No, if you want to reduce crime then enforce the law to its fullest extent and punish criminals instead of trying to rehabilitate them (which has been proven in countless studies to be an exercise in futility). And STOP blaming the police -- we all know that there are crooked cops out there, but they make up well less than 5% of those that wear the uniform and the badge. While we're on the subject of ending crime, how about starting by giving the police the respect they deserve?

I think that you should go back to school and learn how to spell before asking about anything, however...

This is an interesting question... what would our world be like if all police would suddenly disappear?
( I will ignore the last part of the question because it is silly, "almost all crimes?" yah okay.)

We have police to help keep the peace in our society, but we as members of society are the ones that individually decide to follow the laws WE have put into place. We all saw what happened during the Rodney King riots. When people decide "en masse" to not follow the rule of law there is chaos, ten times the number of officers would not have helped the situation.

I think that if all police would suddenly disappear that a majority of people would continue to follow the rules, but it certainly would be a more dangerous and violent place to live.

No. It's a bad idea. All the crimes commit by police are done because of political force on them. If you really want end crimes in police then disband corrupt politicians or make police an independent autonomous body like in US then see the power of police especially in India. When ever an honest police officer wants to do something good to society the politicians from local corporate level to home minister come in their way create all sorts of hurdles.

"experience tells us that almost all crimsare done undr patronage of police."
This makes no sense. It's like rounding up 200 people with cancer and, because they use cell phones, deciding cell phones cause cancer.

Every society has both crime and a police force, but the police is a result of crime, not a cause.

Crimes are committed for various reasons, all of which are against society norms. Patronage of the police is only there to respond to the crime or help prevent a crime, not to indorse them or help perpetrate them. It would be insane to think crime would not exist if police weren't there to protect the innocent. It would be a state of anarchy.

you are incorrect... give the police the ability to do their job without such intense public scrutiny. also, put some of the responsibility back into the hands of the common man to protect his own. loosen up gun laws and allow the common man to carry a side arm the way men did in the old west. also, make it a requirement that all homes have a gun. there is a town in texas that has a city ordinance that all home owners must own a firearm... as a result, that city has had one of the lowest per capita crime rates in the country... lets all defend, support and exersize out 2nd ammendment right to have and bare arms! remember... if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns...

they're actually finding that in areas where they've shifted their police model from a "crime response" to "community policing", their crime levels are drastically reduced and community approval of police goes up. i won't narrate the differences between the two models except to say that in the first they respond to a call or other tip off that a crime has ocurred or is occuring -- in the second model, there are more of them on foot (or bike or horse), in the streets at all times, communicating with persons they see and maintain a constant presence to deter crime from ever ocurring. if your interested, do a little research - - its out there.

You are out in left field wearing a pink bra... but there is this bit of truth in your ravings... we have WAY too many stupid administrative and special interest laws in this country, including those covering victimless crime... The problem is with the legislators, not the beat cops, they only follow orders..(Like like Mi-Lai Calley). If you want to end crime, disband the legislature...

If you actually believe that all crime can be stopped you need therapy. Crime doesn't happen because of the police. Crime happens everyday by all types of people. Business owners, lawyers, doctors, teachers, teens, adults, all races, all religions, all age groups. There is no way to eliminate all crime.
